Lots of changes to the USB3 bus these days. Traditional USB3.0 5Gb/sec is still the most common and the best value for storage with just one or two spinning hard drives. Most computers made before 2016 only support USB3.0, but new Macs and PCs with USB3.1, and its fancier USB Type C (USB3-C) connections, are hitting desktops. Figuring out what to hook to them is a challenge.
USB3.1 10Gb/sec devices with standard Type A connectors connect perfectly to USB3.0 buses but operate at USB3.0 5Gb/sec speeds.
NOTE: USB3 TypeC is a connector that is used for both Thunderbolt3 and USB 3.1 data transfer protocols. Computers with a Thunderbolt3 port can use either USB3-C or Thunderbolt3 devices. USB3-C devices use Hubs and are not chainable like Thunderbolt3 devices.
