High Sierra won't install on SATA

Hello.

I installed High Sierra on my Mac Mini (SSD), no bother.

As my partner was still running El Capitan on her MacBook Pro (old, but upgraded to a 1TB SSD a year or two back), I thought I'd upgrade her machine too, just so we were on the same page.

When I got to the install button, the machine told me it couldn't install on 'this type of drive'.

Any ideas why, or any ideas as to a work-round?

It could be the type of SSD or the connection type, but I'm guessing it's the age of the computer, plus the newer OS. What model is it?

It's:

MacBook Pro aluminium 15 inch late 2008
2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 duo
Memory 6Gb
Serial W89063QH1G0
Drive 1tb SATA

Probably a Toshiba SATA - that's what my local company often fits.

Latest supported operating system is 10.11 on that model Mac. The firmware check won't allow Sierra or newer to install.

Hey Rick, just a thought. If one took the SSD out and loaded it with High Sierra and reinstalled the SSD, would it boot? I have read that you can do that for 2009 model iMacs.
