Software to Organize Too Many Old Backups

Is there software that could sift through many years worth of backup files on many different disks, and select the most recent version of each file?

I appreciate that the most recent version may be damaged, so I still would want to keep my billions of backups, but there must be some way to streamline the detritus of my life by getting all of the most likely to be most useful files on one large (backed-up!) disk.

Not that I am aware of but then I'm not that aware at times. See if someone has a thought...
