Cat was laying on my keyboard while I was gone today, and I come home to two boxes on my screen. Clicking on them does nothing, and I can't figure out how to get them off. Any ideas?

It might be a button located above your "number 3 key" is will arrange your screen into different boxes/windows. I forget the name.

is voiceover turned on? you can turn it off in universal access in System Preferences.
