    Will a 16x pci express video card work on a x8 pcie slot? Thanks

    Rands, Thanks for the link, It was very helpful. I'm not sure if I understood it anyway. If i'm right, its said that most cards are 16x and backward compatible to 8x. They also said there is not much difference, 100% to 95%.

    Result: Yes, a 16x worked in my 8x slot. Cant tell the difference, never had an 8x card before.

    Hello,

    it all depends on the card you are using. Some cards do need the lanes eg. Adaptec, Areca, 3ware RAID controllers. If you install a x8 card in a slot which is physically x16 but x4 only electrically this card won't work.

    Asus and Evga are using NForce200 ICs on a few boards for distributing more lanes to the slots cuz Intels X58/E55xx chipset has 36 lanes only.
