Default Hard Drive Mounts and then spinning beach ball

I have an external drive that mounts, but when you click on it you get the spinning beach ball of death. Apple disk utility says it checks out, but when I use disk warrior on it, the drive hangs up the entire program. I've also used Data Rescue II and that as well hangs about half way through. Any other suggestions?? Options? Help!?!?!?!

Some more info might be helpful i.e. Mac model/OS version, drive make/model, interface, format etc.

Is it a new drive? or one you've been using?

Don't wanna jump the gun, but based on what you said so far, if nothing else has changed (didn't move the drive, change jumpers, etc) I am going with a failing (failed) HD.

If you can rule out issues affecting FW (is it a FireWire drive?) then that pretty much leaves the health of the drive.

What else.....How old a version of DW? If it is too old, we can throw that result out.

Sounds like you are trying to recover data. If DataRescue doesn't cut it, and you followed the instructions, that's not good. Can you give more detail on what DU says?
