    Talking UPDATE info needed!

Been doing research over the last few days.
Getting ready to purchase a processor with- in the next few days.
Wonít be buying until Iím sure which one will BEST suit my needs.

Iím using FCP, AE, Photoshop and Illustrator (always keep this in mind)

Have three Seagate HDs and 1.5GB of Ram.
Like some, this is a production machine.

Would be a "dream" to have it as fast as possible of course, but have to keep my wits under control ....if you know what I mean.
I can't really see in having a G4 hot-roded to the point that it's not reliable.

I donít mind cutting, bending and repacing fans and what-nots, if there is a "light at the end of the tunnel".
I want to get this off on the right track.
Only want to dismantle it 100% once if possible. Once will be enough!

    To get things started!

    Concerns:
    1. How does the L3 cache of older units (1.33 or 1.4 Ė 7455)
compared to the speed in the new 4747A processors for the above apps.
    2. Is the L3 cache still needed?
    3. I checked the GIGA DESIGNS web site and they show that their 1.6 GHz
    is back ordered until September.
    4. My biggest concern is STABILLTY!
    5. I got a chance to pick up a NEW GIGA 2 GHz (3 year warranty) for
    $330.00 (free shipping).
    6. Wanted to purchase from Gurus, but they donít accept PayPal.
    7. I am planning on a 9600 or GeForce Ti4 video card a new DVD burner.
    8. I can fabricate ANY modification thatís needed!
Just need some ideas? I have all the pictures and posts saved in one spot.
So I can get to them real easy
    9. Last but not least, what is going on with the 7448s?

Is there going to be another step-up in the near future from Giga or whom-ever is top dog of the month, for our down-trodden G4s?

I will make a new thread in "custom configurations" after I get the parts rounded together.

I have been waiting and praying for a couple of years to be able to start this thread and I might add ......... QUITE JEALOUS at times!
I know a lot is going on with this set up and we'll be getting to ...... all those questions and answers in the next few posts.

    Let the games begin!
    Any info. is greatly appreciated!

Not necessarily the final word by a long shot, but here's my take:

After seeing the way that the G4 upgrade market is going I decided I'd better just get what I could afford now. The Giga dual 1.6 7447 has been great. Other than some issues I had after reassembling the Mystic after the complete take-apart it's been flawless. Totally stable, and very fast. Handles a good load of simultanious processes too. I think the issues I had had to do with the drives, and not the Giga since after restoring my system from a .dmg backup everything is fine.

Cooling is important for all components, and noise is also an issue for me. I can't have a leaf-blower sitting on the floor next to my desk. To get both serious mods were mandatory, and more are planned when I add more heat-producing. and current-sucking components.

At this point unfortunately I don't think the G4 upgrade market has a very bright future. Get the stuff you need while you still can, and wait for IntelMac to mature or bail-out & get a G5. I like tinkering with this stuff, and it's easier for me to spend a little more in small chunks over the long-term. My setup does what I need it to do without complaint, and that's the most important thing IMHO.

    Thumbs up Brane!

    That was quick!
    I'm glad you were online.
Iwant to swell your head, I like your ideas for cooling.

    Really good!

    One night, just thought I'd see how many OT projects I could open and play at the same time with this stock DA 533;
I believe about twelve at 720x480 res.

After about two and a half hours, with all of them playing at the same time, she froze.
    So heat issues are paramont!

I'm with you, "get while the gettings good".
Besides, I can't wait. Only if the new one would be cooler"

I'll make a list of parts that I think I need and report back.
Don't want to leave out any steps.

    Lightbulb

Is it really worth it and cost effective? Wouldn't there be more wisdom in cutting and running? time to sell the G4s and buy one of the G5 2.3's would be more productive. And the Apple Store Specials look good.

I forgot to ask in the first post!
I at one time had a file downloaded from here on the G4 manual.

    Can't find it!

I found a couple post on where to look, but they lead to a DEAD END.
    Can someone redirect me?
    thanks, h

WOW! That sucks! Whoopis does a whoopsi, how sad.

I have some info for the B&W, G4(not MDD), and G5(late2004), but couldn't possibly comment on where it came from.

e-mail me if I can help.

    Cool

Well, I missed buying the processorÖ. too late.
Found my Quicksilver fan/ assembly viaÖ. eBay in the mail.

So, I want to strip her down naked as a bird.
I canít really do anything untilÖ.. I GETS A MANUAL.
I mean, I could, but Iím not!

Call all your buddies, tellíem one of your Mac brothers need that G4 DA service manual,,,,,,,, also for the sake of the community!
Lets get this GIGA upgrade/ update threadÖ.. well, upgraded/ updated.
    What do you guys think?

Think Iíll start a NEW thread asking for a manual.

Therefore innocent bystanders dropping buy this site just might
scroll down the list far enough to see ď G4 DA manual needĒ
When I get a manual, Iíll get back on this THREAD and make a new post.

Or somebody can post the manual here.

Hope I can get/find a manual before temptation becomes too great!
BTW, I have all the manuals for the Quicksilver and DA from Apple.
    They don't show ......$h#T!

    Default Hey Dave!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been looking everwhere I can think of for the last couple of hours...with NO luck.
Was thinking "hell, eBay, land of the low life"

I did find a number of CDs. Least expensive was around $11.oo w/sh.
Not knoing if their worth it or not...... haven't bitten the bullet yet.
If you can send that copy GREAT!

    thanks Dave!

I'm also trying to find a retail outlet to get my Giga.
    One that will take PayPal.
    Got any clues?
    Anyone?

I removed your email address, not a good idea to post, update your user info... you should have the PDF I sent soon.
Have you contacted Rick about purchasing the Giga Upgrade?
I am sure he can work thru your PayPal issues..

    Thumbs up Got It!

    That would be the one!

I don't know why you couldn't email me the first time.
Checked my profile and email info. Seems ok to me.

I'm going to contact Rick, I'm sure he'd want my sales!
Planning on a processor within the next couple days.

I guess the next step would be to get my fans together.
I'll make a list of all I have found on gurus, then post.
We can try and pick the best senario to eliminate the heating problems.
A new day, a new way .......maybe!

    Double check your info
    Glad you received the PDF.
Also... I would suggest one upgrade at a time.
Too many things at one time will make future troubleshooting much more difficult.

    Right on!
I have been trying to change my email info.
Every time I type my passwoed in, make changes, hit say changes.....a new widow opens and says "that password is already in use, go back and enter a new password".
I'm not trying to change my password.
The email should change to the new with the one I'm using now- correct?

I'm just about feed- up with the internet for one day.
    I'll try again later!

Thats good.......one step at a time!

If you're attracted to the price/performance ratio of a Giga dual 1.6 7447, I might be selling mine soon. It's less than a year old and was bought from the Gurus. Has performed very well, but the fans are loud to me and I don't really need the G4 to all my heavy lifting as I've a G5, so I'm looking to downgrade myself to a dual 533 that I have in the pipe.

    Yep, Tired here also.
Might need to move the move the Guru User CP problems to another thread
    to avoid confusion...
Need help from those more savy than myself.
Leighgion... any thoughts as to price?

I'll have my dual 533 in a couple days, but my testing time will be limited on the weekend with family around. Once I can get some testing done to make sure it's enough horsepower for my G4's dedicated tasks, then I'll post about hocking the Giga. Don't want to conjure up asking price until I'm sure I'm going to get rid of it. Should be no later mid-week and possibly early as Sunday.

    Talking

    Iíve done it now1
One- Giga 1.8 GHz processor on the way.
One- Quicksilver fan / shroud on the way.

Wanting to get the cooling ideas started so when time comes to stripping it down, Iíll have all the parts that I need for rebuilding.

    From the G4 manualÖÖ operating temperature Ė 50 to 95F or 10 to 30C.
    DA power ÖÖ..338w.

I would like to try and maintain the lowest possible temperature that is reasonable.
Iím also running three 10K HDs.

Iíll do a little more research on fans, coolers and such.
    Be back later!
