Question Photoshop quitting or system crashing

    Hi,

Looking for any ideas. I am suspecting bad ram, bad video card, hopefully not an issue with the cpu. I have a G4 running Tiger.
No problems working in word, excel, safari. Problem is when I work in photoshop. Yesterday I had several images open in photoshop and the system crashed [not a typical crash though, the whole screen went black and I could not wake it up]. After rebooting I opened up only a few files, started working on one and photoshop quit. When I tried to reopen the file I got this message 'this document has been damaged by disk error. The most likely causes are: a defective disk drive, a defective disk drive cable, or incorrect peripheral cable termination. Some of the pixels may be invalid." I opened the file and it had been corrupted - it had bands of color.

I am using an IOGear kvm switch to share the printer, and mouse between two systems.

Reason I suspect the vido card is that after this happened I was viewing some images in an online picture gallery -kodak site in safari and one of the images looked corrupted.

Any thoughts or questions are appreciated. We have checked the cables and they appear to be secure. It is HFS extended, 64mb Vram, Ram is 3 -512mb SDram and 1- 256mb Sdram

    Thanks!

    Default more info

Just happened again. I was working on one file in photoshop. Went to make a curve adjustment but it could not complete because of a "program error" then the system crashed again.

    Question

Hard to make any suggestions as to why or what... First U'd have to give us a little more info as to which system. 4 Ram slots, from what I could deduct. That could makit a GigE or a MDD...

How large is the file involved in the crashes..?

I posted similar troubles here, recently. Unit still with the tecchies, though. After consulting with Apple Care, it seemed to be the mobo. Or the DP CPU. Or both...

U seem to have one advantage; no crashes in Safari...

Anyhow, giving us a bit more info might advance Ur case.

Here is a little more info. I have the G4 mirrored door. Safari has quit on occasion but does not cause the system to totally crash like photoshop. Illustrator has crashed previously too. Here is the latest panic log if it helps? File size soes not seem to matter. Latest crash was with a 31mb file.

    Welcome to the forums, pushcart1111.

Photoshop pushes RAM harder than many programs. I would suspect your RAM first since this sounds like a system-wide problem.

You can test the RAM in various ways:

    1. Use the Apple Hardware Test cd or dvd which came with the computer to test the RAM- and the video card and logic board. Use the "Extended Test" in Loop Mode by pressing control + L before running the test. This will run the tests continuously. I suggest starting the test in the evening and running it all night.

    2. You can test using memtest, which is also an excellent RAM tester. Again- test it overnight.

    3. Take all the modules out and test just one at a time.

If the modules have different CAS latencies or timings, sometimes OSX can have trouble with that. Did your app crashes and kernel panics begin when you installed additional RAM or other hardware?

I purchased the system used last fall and have had trouble from the start. It crashed a lot until it finally died. The mac systmes guy at my work reformatted the drive but said it looked real clean, barely used. he also said all the connections are fine. It came with older system software that is not compatible with hfs extended he told me, so i will need to buy new OS software. But it themeantime he installed tiger for me. It is also came with Apple Hardware test [which I think you are referencing? It is Power mac G4 version1.1 Since the system disks were not compatible do you think this is? If so I will try to run it. I have run disk warrior but it does not seem to fix the issue. also have run disk utility to fix permissions, and trashed photoshop preferences.

    Thanks

Pushcart, if you can- post the System Profile by navigating to the Apple menu>About this mac>more info. Then in System Profilor, save the file, open it and select all and copy and then paste that into a forum reply in this thread. Then we can see just what is what, and suggest and good troubleshooting path...

If that is the AHT which shipped originally with the computer, it should work just fine. If it is a separate cd, boot to it by holding down the C key during startup. If it is on the Installer cd or dvd, boot to Apple Hardware Test by holding down the Option key during startup. What are the other cds which came with the computer?

I have the system profile as a .txt file but I cannot paste it or attach it [too much info] Can you tell me which parts of the profile I can copy/paste for you? I did remove the font section and printer log but the file is still too large.

to your other question. The computer came with OS cds 9 - 10.3 but they are not compatible with the extended drive. The seller installed Tigar for me originally.

    Thanks so much!

but the file is still too large.
All the way down to Applications would be good. If that's still too large paste it into 2 replies.

As far as the cds, is the AHT on a separate cd or on the Panther (OSX.3) cd/dvd?

AHT is on its own separate cd

    Hi pushcart1111,

I went ahead and deleted some info from your SP postings just for safety.

So you have a single processor 1.25GHz PowerMac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003) "Wind Tunnel".

If you look at the RAM specs, you'll see that one of the modules has a different timing: 30330 instead of the 25330 of the other three. That may or may not be a problem.

First thing to do is boot from the Apple Hardware Test cd and run the Extended test overnight in Loop Mode. Then we can go from there.

Sounds great. I will try to run AHT overnight if it is compatible. I have been suspecting the ram so I hope that is it. question is how do I figure out which ram stick it is? One other note, I though the ram had to match e.g. if you put one 512 you have to add another 512 and so forth. If that is so then 3 -512s and one 256 would not be the ideal set up? I believe this was true of older macs, may be that is not longer optimal..

AHTdoes not work on the system. tried to boot up holding down the c key. I do not think the cd is compatible, none of the other cds included were. Should I just remove that one ram that had the different timing and see if that fixes the issue? How canI tell which one it is? If I order more ram how do I ensure the timing will be set up to match the others?

    Thanks

No, the RAM doesn't have to be the same MB amount, but CAS timings could be an issue, and the slot order for the particular sticks may also be an issue. I've put the word out to kaye, who is expert with this particular computer...

If that AHT is not for that computer, you can probably order one from Apple- my guess $20.
Also, I believe the original installer for that computer would have been 10.2 "Jaguar" not 10.3 "Panther". Either of those is compatible with Mac OS Extended + (HFS+) formatting- which is what your hard drive is now.

Try putting the cd in and restarting and holding down the Option key after the boot chime. This brings you into the Startup manager. If the AHT disk is seen by the SM, select it and see if it will load...

If the AHT cd definitely doesn't work, first try removing the 30330 stick and running the rig a bit to see what happens. Kaye will advise in which slots they should go.

When you attempt to boot from the AHT cd, does it simply bypass it and boot into the system on the hard drive? Or is there a kernel panic (white lines of type on black background on gray dimmed screen)?

Researching this, it looks like you want Apple Hardware Test 1.2.7 if you have to order one.
