Default Black Rectangular Box at Start Up

I just got back from a facility that has a dual 1.25 G4 mirror running OS10.2.6. Whenever I try to install software it may or may not reboot. When it doesn't reboot it just shows a rectangular box where the stem of the apple is. My only recourse was to re-install all of the system software and start over. Any idea what this box indicates?

    Hello filthy,

the easyest way is to download Cocktail "repair permissions" and "force prebinding" that solved it for me.

    Cocktail for Panther 10.3

    Cocktail for Jaguar 10.2

    Hello filthy,

    last thing to try is:

start from the OSX CD/DVD then start Disk Utility select the HD and start the Volume Repair.

If you install a new OS you can make an archive install, the old system and stuff would be moved to a folder named old system software.

    Confused

thanks Nicolas. I also tried Disc Warrior as well as Apples Disk Utility. What causes this to happen? Honestly the biggest hastle is the time it takes to reinstall the OS. I should mention that this only happens on macs that are running Avid Media Composer software. The system I was referring to in my original post had this problem whenever I tried to install software or OS software updates. My system is having this problem after I tried to update my Avid software. It's just an obnoxious problem and I wish I knew what it was and what is causing it to happen.

    Filthy,

had this issue after some SCSI driver errors, so, it could be a data corruption on the boot drive or an IO error I think.

    Best regards

Black box = kernel panic screen?

... running 10.2.6 - I assume you don't want Panther, or can't. And that RAM has been ruled out.

    Hello TZ,

a black box instead of the Apple Logo with some gray pixels "jumping around". I had that in 10.3.7 after the ATTO driver issue.

    Best Regards

The Avid software will only run on 10.2.6 I wish I could use 10.3.8. It must have something to do with the Avid software because I've now discovered several other editors having the same issues.

Here is my latest observation. If I install 10.2.8, Avid software and then install the latest Apple security update I get the black box. If I stay at 10.2.6 and install the Avid software, no security update, then everything works fine. Don't know why but if it works this way then I'll be happy to have a working system but forever confused as to why it fails to function after the security update...

    filthy,

do you have an ATTO SCSI card installed?

When yes, what driver version you are using?

I believe so, when I do a system profile it just says "unknown" for the name. I'm not at the G4 at the moment but the only way to find out would be to open up the machine and check. I'll have to do that later in the week.

Well it looks like I needed to update the scsi drivers. I did but now I don't feel like attempting to upgrade to 10.2.8! Mostly because I have the system pretty much back to where it was and don't want to get hung up if any problems arise....damn!

I agree, if you are "in production" and if it works, don't touch it.
