My System Preferences crashes when I try to access Desktop and Screensaver. It crashes each time I try to access Desktop settings It also starts then closes when I try to control+click on the desktop and select Change Desktop Background. I've tried to clear the cache for the preferences but it still occurs.

When you crash, do you go into single user mode and force an fsck? you have to force if journaling is enabled.

when you tried to clear the caches, all three? by hand, or using Panther Cache Cleaner? (or another 10.3.1 compliant utility).

Also, delete the .plist for preferencepanes while at it.

And, have you added any 3rd party that install a preferencepane?
