    Greetings all,

Just picked up a g3/266 (beige/rev. 1) p.m. (for 40 bucks locally ) that has 8.5 on it now and I'm trying to get to 9.+ but whenever I run the install app the splash screen comes up then BAM, it hits me with a "This software can not run on your system, please refer to the documentation." Now I know this is probally a rookie question but this rookie needs help.

    Thanks for your time,

-A bored Net Admin that's playin' with macs.-

You need a retail copy of OS 9 (OS X 10.1 came with full 9.1 CDs and can still be found, or call Apple). What you have sounds like an "OEM" copy that was specific to a machine. People do sell OEM copies but you need to ask and be careful.

You'll also need/want to initialize the destination disk drive with Drive Setup 2.04/2.07 before installing.

Prices for SDRAM are on the rise. Crucial has upped the price of all SDRAM and PC133 is now more expensive than DDR, and PC100/PC66 is much more expensive than PC133, $75 for 256MB PC100 - you can find cheaper memory, and you can also have trouble down the road.

Sonnet will soon have a 1GHz G4 for $590 for Beige systems, so it should be a nice machine and give lots of good use if you so decide.

Adding USB and an ATA controller, better hdd are other options. Lot of info on cpu and drive upgrades is on www.xlr8yourmac.com and here. Easy to search both sites using www.google.com advanced button or just www.google.com/mac.html for mac-specific results.

Wow, that was phast! I was expecting to wait all day for a response. I think your right on that. I think I might just go get X and screw 9. N-E way, as far as memory goes, i'm at 96 now, and I'm staring at a pc-133 256 dimm from micron and was thinking of putting that in. Correct me if i'm wrong but won't the dimm drop it's speed to pc-100 if I put it in?

    Thanks a ton Gregory.

No way on the PC133. That only happens in the NewWorld (Blue G3 or later) that have a 100 MHz front side bus. Beige has 66 MHz bus (even if you OC the bus, that doesn't count and messes with timinig issue).

Look at the Memory Forum FAQ, and there have been numerous threads on Beige. Nice to have 9.1/9.2.2, in fact sort of essential to even make it happen. So you do want 10.1 package, AND Jaguar 10.2.5+ If you buy Jaguar, the Apple Store phone line should sell 9.2.1 for $20.

OWC has PC100 10 ns which is what you need. I bought some quality $62/256MB DRAM that was listed as PC100 but turned out to be PC133s. this SDRAM $36 256MB should work.

MAN, that eats it. Oh well, I see some overhaulz in the future. Last question for you Gregory sence you sound like you've been in the mac game for a while, what a good place to get good, used/new mac hardware. (and please don't say "EBAY").

    Thanks again for your help,

Specifically what hardware? and no, never ebay. In fact, outside the beige box, I wouldn't put anything used in there.

Might want to look at picking up a real G4 as others migrate up the "food chain" to newer MDD models etc? Even a low-end G4 MDD $1499 w/ 1GHz might make sense.

You could put G3/800 $289, or G4/500 for same price. Or, G3/500 for $170. G4/1.0 GHz $590. All Sonnet. All great upgrades. Gradually improve system and get some hands on.

    3 x 256MB RAM OWC @ $36 ea. $108

Only other update folks do is better video card. ATI Radeon 7000 $120 or Rage 128 $40.
    www.googlegear.com or www.hypermicro.com for hdds.

This system, with 768MB RAM, G4/500, 36GB 10K SCSI, is what I use for most stuff, and is nice. Worth investing in. Beige has a quiet okay fan noise, not that loud, and is nearly as fast as B&W G3/450. (Which will get a 1.1 GHz G4 later).

Picking up a good book on OS 9, OS X, from "Missing Manaul" series David Pogue and a troubleshooting set of books (we ALL need help with Jaguar's new lingo and techniques). And, we all swear by Alsoft's Disk Warrior to keep drives running well.

I didn't mean or want to scare you away from upgrading - you can still get nice use from it. Even with today's memory price, 256MB for $36 or even $75 isn't horrible.

I could probably outfit another beige just from spares - couple 128's SDRAM chips, hdd, video card, G3/400 Apple Zif. Probably $150-ish worth of spare parts.

Therein lies the all-mighty question my good man: Reserve thy funds for a *coughrealcough* mac....or do the trailer-park challenge with the upgrades and hope for the best. From what I've seen so far it looks like I can get a decent system if I don't mind the 66hz issue. Looks like I may have to screw the T.P.C. though cause I'm aimin' for an intense multimedia machine (building a personal recording studio) with some video editing in mind. My inital thoughts on this machine was "holy f%ck, 40 bucks!". I think I may just beef up the mem a little and make it my crutch machine till I get a dualie 866 (what i'm aimin' for.). Untill then, I'm gunna be learin' from those books you suggested.

In the meatime, check out www.pricewatch.com, they have pc100 256 dimms for 27 bucks. Makes my nips hard.

Once again, thanks for your time.
