    hello all,

I have a 40gig firewire external drive that I leave on all the time. Is this okay? When I put my system to sleep I assume that only affects the startup disk, right?

there's usually nothing wrong with leaving your drives spun up....it's actually less wear and tear on them than the torque of spinning up from rest, or a cold start. They literally draw milliamps.

I leave mine running forever. I do let my displays dim. That's where the wasted BTU's are, anyway.

I'm really not sure if Energy Saver puts a FireWire to sleep or not. Why don't you try it and report.

I don't think it does but I'm not sure how to tell exactly. I don't hear it spin down or up when I sleep and wake. But if its better for the HDs overall to simply stay on, I won't worry about it.

    thanks,
