I'm thinking about upgrading my CD-RW and I was wondering about something I read on your IDE Plextor CD-RW section:

    quote:
With average random access times of 140ms, a 2MB buffer, and an EIDE/ATAPI-4 interface, the PlexWriter 16/10/40A extracts digital audio at 40x, and supports CD-DA, CD-ROM (Mode 1), CD-ROM (Mixed Mode), CD-ROM XA (Mode 2, Form 1, Form 2 and Mixed Form), CD-I, Photo CD, Video CD, CD-Extra, CD+G, and CD Text.

Does that mean that this CD-RW can't burn PC-compatible discs? As far as I know, it's ISO 9660 that allows this, no?

Is my knowledge out of date or am I messing up somewhere?

ISO format is a function of the software used not the drives ability. Discribe Toast, and Nero all support ISO burning on a Mac.

Ah... That explains a bit. Thanks for the response!

As an aside, has anyone tried sticking an IDE Plextor in an ADS Pyro Firewire case?...

I think it has been done, and discussed in the Accelerate Your Mac database.

I wouldn't use an ADS case. We'll be selling better ones here shortly.

Reeeeaaally? Better than ADS? Hmmm... Might be... interesting.

And just how soon _is_ "soon"?

I can wait that long, then... This purchase won't become a concern until late April.

I drooled a bit when I saw Yamaha's announcement for the upcoming 20x model...

I suspect Plextor will have a superior unit out and shipping before Yamaha....they just don't make a habit of disseminating optimistic "coming soon" press releases.

I'm not so certain, though....how useful a 20x CDRW really is? What kind of media will that thing require? Sure would be nice to burn 650MB in a minute or so, though....

    Mag,

I may be drooling about it, but I won't buy it. Crap, I mean I have a 4x right now an when I change, it'll probably be to a 12x, maybe 16x if I find a really deal on one.

I mean, a 12x can burn an 80 min CD in 6.6 minutes, while a 16x does it in 5 minutes. Not much of a difference at that point. 20x would do it in 4 minutes (theoretically), but as you pointed out, it's probably gonna need special media.

12x is more than fine for my needs right now, but the arrival of 20x burners may be a *good* thing in that 12x burners may become cheaper as a result...

If burners keep going up in speed, soon we'll need RAID arrays to keep the data stream flowing well.

Wanna bet the first released version of the drive will be an ide. Poor PC guys are going to need a 1Ghz machine to keep it feed!

Just installed a 8x Yamaha in a 450 PIII. Poor guy couldn't burn faster than 2x with a 7200 rpm Maxtor on the same or different channel. Was forced to install a Bluenote with Kenwood 52x SCSI I pulled from my 9600 when I upgraded to the Plextor 40x.

Whaaa? Why? I mean, I have two 7200 rpm Maxtors and QuickBench (from HDST) tells me I *easily* get 15 MB/sec... Heck, it's enough for my (admittedly amateurish) Aurora Fuse work.

Or are PC IDE controllers that crappy?

    Heh. This just gets funkier.

Sanyo just announced a 24x10x40 CD-RW with Burn-Proof. OEM only, though.

This "coming soon" stuff is getting out of hand... Who will be next?

Hmmm... an 80 min CD in 3.3 minutes. It *would* be nice, though!
