I get this error message at startup sometimes I'd say maybe 30% of the time

Any clue?

Never seen it. In which OS?

I would click the OK button. :D

.....Check Console and see if there are any clues? What happens after the error message?

You don't hear noises coming from the attic..... do you?

I DO click the ok button and everything is fine

and no.. no unknown evil noises in the house that aren't purposely generated by me

Searched Apple with no results a few weeks ago

But today I see an answer on the Apple forums. Seems a startup item causes this, don't know which one yet but I don't have many

Classic Menu

if it's the iTunesHelper then I doubt there is anything I can do about it
Classic Menu is an app and does NOT install any system/kernel extensions
Trackball Works does install a kext so I am suspicious…
SMC Fan Control probably does as well but I don't know for sure

None of this stuff is newly installed. I think this started happening with 10.8. I think I'll go check for updates….

I have pared it down to two items

I have an applescript that I use to launch all my commonly used apps, I added the other two to that. (one click = 8 apps launched)

I have USB Overdrive but I don't like the way it handles my trackball so I will be needing to keep Trackball Works, also USB O/D installs a kext as well.

I use iTunes more than any other app…

Seems to be apple related. Found several more posts about it now and several apps are mentioned (FCP, iTunes, iMovie) ALL I have found mentioned are Apple applications and all are multi media related.

I am betting this is a Quicktime error

Found this…

What does iTunes Helper do? (http://osxdaily.com/2009/09/10/ituneshelper-what-does-itunes-helper-do/)

So it's now disabled. This makes trackball works my only startup item.

Good deal.

Always want to make sure that your (track)balls are handled correctly. That's very important. :)

Q.E.D. Hence the noises in the attic being self attributable.
