Hi I have a 15" Powerbook 1.5ghz, 2 gb ddr with os x 10.4 installed. The machine will install OS X without a problem, but will startup in safe mode after the install. If I completely wipe the drive and fresh install (no archive), the machine will typically install and boot up properly, but within a week, the computer will freeze and the screen will go black, (a backlit black with a ghostly image of there the dock should be(not sleep mode black)). It ALWAYS boots in safe mode, I have ran Tech Tool Pro on a loop 35 times and it passes every time. I have ran Disk warrior. I have done all the normal tries, zapping the pram, resetting nvram, set defaults, etc. Any Ideas? Here is my last console.log

So, you mean it starts in Safe mode even though you don't hold any keys down?

You said you did a clean install of 10.4........did you also update beyond the install? If not, consider downloading and installing 10.4.11 Combo updater to help rule out software issues.

Outside of that, it could be a flaky or dying HD. Any chance you have a firewire drive you could install 10.4 on and boot from for testing. Easy way to remove the internal drive as a variable during troubleshooting.

Is it possible that some software you installed later, after the OS was up and happy may be the cause?

It has the 10.4.11 update installed. I already swapped out the hard drive, the fresh install worked for about a week, then proceeded with booting problems. I haven't installed any other software on the machine. Every so often when I boot the screen will go black, (not sleep mode black, you can see that the backlight is on, and there is a ghostly image of where the dock usually is). I have also ran memtest in single user mode, everything checked out clear. I am beginning to suspect logic board or video components somewhere.
Mac authority wants over $100 to look at it for one hour. I've spent upwards of 20 digging into it and I don't think they will be able to test it half as much as I have in an hour. Then they will just come back with a $300+ logic board repair plus another 100 for the hour. I might as well buy another powerbook on ebay for that.
