View Full Version : Is Raptor from DELL ok in a new Mac Pro?

I've just bought a new 8-core Mac Pro (to replace my old G4 400).
I have a new sealed hard drive from a Dell computer. It's a WD Raptor 160 GB. (Not 150 Gb). It's hard to find real specs for it on the web as it's only sold at Dell.
Model n: WD1600ADFS (WD1600ADFS-75SLR2). Rev A00 Firmware R2.

I was wondering if I could use this hard drive as my boot drive without any problem? Is there any compatibility issues?

Does anybody know if it's ok or not?

Thank you in advance.

No way of knowing if Dell did anything funky with the firmware. Give a shot.

Yes, no way to know what happens with OEM firmware. May work great, may not. Odds are good.

Be sure to have a good backup of everything you put on the drive, and run it through its paces for a bit before you decide it is OK. I would zero out the drive with DU first, then do several restarts to be sure it always mounts without issue, then install an OS and be sure it is bootable and does not do anything strange.....then I would feel pretty safe to use it. Good habits with any drive.

The Mac pro is brand new. Nothing is installed on it. I will install Leopard on the Dell Raptor and try to reboot several times. I hope it will be ok. This drive should be a good boot drive.
