Hello, I am looking for an 8-bay eSATA box, and I was curious how loud the Burly 8-bay box is? I realize running 8 drives will create a certain level of noise but I am trying to not turn my office into a Wind Tunnel.

Do you guys, have any comparable noise for the 8 Bay box, or do you recommend that I look for 2 x 4 bay boxes.

Many thanks in advance

The rack mount was never really engineered to be quiet. Most racks aren't. However the design itself isn't too bad with a couple of slow turning 80 mm fans and a huge old 120. Where the noise comes from mostly is the small 40 mm fans on each hotswap bay.

We did some testing by disconnecting the 40 mm fans and the enclosure is pretty nice then. We found that with the huge amount of airflow the three big fans produce the little ones were not only redundant but unnecessary.

Great enclosure. Very solid heavy steel that won't buzz or vibrate. Getting the air sounds down is the key.
