Apple announced four updates to their media applications today at an invite-only media event at the NAB conference:

Final Cut Pro 5
Motion 2
SoundTrack Pro
DVD Studio Pro 4

All four products are now also bundled in a package called Final Cut Studio which delivers all products for $1299.

Apple has updated the online Apple Store to reflect the changes. Each application is still available individually.

Update: Shake 4 was also announced.

No hardware updates announced. Rumors have placed various hardware updates for this month. Of historical interest -- last year Apple did make new hardware announcements the Monday after their Sunday NAB media event.

According to Apple Store the minimal hardware requirements to use Final Cut Studio are:

- Macintosh computer with an 867MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processor G4 or G5. but authoring HD DVDs requires a G5 processor.
- 512MB RAM; HD features require 1GB of RAM; but 2 GB are recommended
- Display 1024x768
- AGP Quartz Extreme Graphics card.

For Motion:
- A Power Mac, PowerBook, iMac based on G4 or G5 processor and running at 1.25GHz or more. BUT:

One of the following graphics cards is highly recommended: NVIDIA GeForce FX 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL (NV40), ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (RV M11), ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (R350), or 9800 XT (R360).
So in practice, only recent computers can use Motion 2.

- Mac OS X v10.3.9 or Mac OS X v10.4 or later; Mac OS X v10.4 or later required to use Core Image Units and 16 and 32-bit float rendering in Motion

- QuickTime 7 or later
- 4 GB of disk space required to install all applications AND 41GB required to install all optional templates, loops, content, and tutorials (may be installed on separate disks).

But one can also see at the bottom of the page:
- Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored HD DVDs requires a G5 processor, Mac OS X v10.4 and Apple DVD Player 4.6 or later
- Replication of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored DVDs requires a DLT drive
