Good look at MP vs SP, G4 vs G5, and effect
of more RAM and RAID disk drives.

the short of it: CPU is the cricial factor.

This is exactly what we saw when our in-house video guy running FCP migrated from a G4 800 emac to the Dually 2G G5.

And yes, 1.5G of memory made no (noticable) difference from 512MB. We were pretty sure *the* bottleneck was CPU or maybe CPU and bus speed, and sure enough the G5 was wicked fast out of the box - no extra memory not crankin' SCSI array.

Nice to see the tests show the same as our fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants impressions.

Just wait until the dual 2.5s and then the dual 3s show up - and with even more optimization with 10.3.5!

Update over at www.Barefeats.com (http://www.Barefeats.com) between G5's and G4's. http://www.barefeats.com/fcp4.html

G5 2.0DP cuts almost in half the time taken on G4-MDD 1.25DP it seems.

will be nice to see what a 2.4-2.6DP G5 shows.
