Ok, please tell me if this is right:

Dual 500MHz G4 10.2.6 w/added 106D -
4x DVD burning
No Apple disc burning until 10.2.8 w/o a patch
No Buffer Underrun Prevention with Toast 5/6

800MHz iMac 17" Flat Panel w/OEM 104
Firmware Version A227 so no update required for 4x media, but will only burn 4x media at 1x

350MHz G4 (Sawtooth) w/added 103
Firmware Version 1.65 so must be updated, but then will only burn 4x media at 1x

466MHz G4 (Digital Audio) w/added 104
Firmware Version 1.30, from what I can tell on some PC sites, it does not need an update, but would still only burn 4x media at 1x. Does it need an update?

So, if I bought a DVD-R that said 4x-2x-1x speed, then each of the above drives would burn at their fastest speed (2x for the 103 and 104, 4x for the 106D). But if I bought a DVD-R that was 4x only (if they even exist), it would burn at 1x on all but the 106D?

I'm asking because I only want to buy 1 type of DVD-R for all the above machines, each burning at their highest speed.

Since Toast does not have buffer underrun prevention for the 106D, I haven't been able to complete a 4x burn with BeAll 1x-4x media. Has anyone tried Dragonburn? It seems some people on XLR8yourmac have used it, but there's not a whole lot of info, only that it does support buffer underrun prevention for the 106D. Will it verify after burning like Toast does? I have to know each DVD is error-free. I have been using Maxell DVD-Rs for a long time at 2x with excellent results and compatibility, but I'm giving BeAll a shot to check out it's claims of the widest DVD player compatibility. Any thoughts or patches that may help?

Thee current page at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ has a note that Toast v6.0.1 (so far you have to have purchased Toast 6 via download) has buffer underrun protection (Pioneer DVR-106D tested). k

Yep, I just purchased the download of Toast 6, and it is 6.01. The added BUP works fine, and with it and the 106D, a full disk burns in 13.5 min. FWIW, the BeAll media doesn't seem to be more compatible than Maxell, but there have been no errors and they are a bit cheaper.

Thanks Kaye!

What is a good source for blank DVDs? I will soon have a Superdrive and want to have a few to burn some home movies.
Thanks.

I liked and had good dealings with TapeResources.com. They always shipped quickly and had a lot of stock. If you're affiliated with a business, you can use DBLdistributing.com, and they have great prices. I used Meritline.com once recently, and they were fine too.

In looking for firmware, I installed:

Ver. 2.0 for the 103 enables 2x write on 4x media

Ver. 1.40 for the 104 enables 2x write on 4x media

And as I feared, the BeAll 1x-2x-4x media will only burn 1x in the iMac because of the standard A227 firmware. I don't see how that version is a "fix" if it makes the drive burn at half it's rated speed on some media, and of course the Pioneer aftermarket updater won't run with the drive's Apple ROM. I realize it would burn 2x on 1x-2x media, but I don't want to have to buy different DVDs specifically for it to burn. What a pain. Oh well, I don't use it too much for DVDs anyway.

About the iMac and the w/OEM 104, are you sure that is up to a 4x? http://meritline.com/nebe1dv45010.html BeALL?ΡΆ 4.7GB 1X-4X Certified DVD-R Blank Media seems to indicate the Pioneer DVR-104/A04 is a 1X, 2X. Even if so, it should be burning at 2x. What am I missing here? k

DUH! I have a SuperDrive Pioneer 104 in my G4-1.25G DP dual boot. It specs at:

Writes DVD-R at 2x
Reads DVDs at 6x
Writes CD-R at 8x
Writes CD-RW at 4x
Reads CDs at 24x

Yes, the 104 DVD-R max burn speed is 2x. But if you use a 4x DVD-R (such as the 1x-4x BeAll) to be burned, it will do so only at 1x. That was the "fix" in the firmware update to work around the laser burnout bug when using 4x DVDs in those drives.

What version is on your drive?

d, I'm not on my MDD at the moment. As soon as I shutdown this QS, the MDD is going to get the latest ATTO stuff for UL3Ds, then backup my 10.2.8, and on to Panther. So I won't be back until tonite. I had forgotten about that 4x problem. Don't know if I've applied it but probably so. My DVD-Rs are all 1x-2x BeAll from Meritline. Let you know later. k

My MDD with Pioneer DVR-104 has the firmware update A227. I don't have a 4x blank to see what it will burn at however. k
