View Full Version : DVD-R Brands and Success

I am wondering as to the level of success with using other than Apple DVD-Rs. I am mostly looking at the cost difference, seeing as how five 4x Apple DVDs are about $20, and most other brands are about ten for $20. Has anyone had regular success with non-Apple discs? If so, what brands do you use? Also what speed are the discs that you have had success with? Thanks for the help.

I have never burned a DVD but as CD's go I burn mp3's, data and backup data and have had all good luck with a small spindle of "name brand" a 30 spindle of "non name brand" and am just started working on a 100 "non name brand" now.

This is refering to CD's but has some good info. (http://www.macgurus.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=40160367&f=86360149&m=15760149)

I am one of the guilty parties on that thread that rwm has linked you to. I have two G4s with Apple SuperDrives. One has the Pioneer DVR-103, the other the DVR-104. Both write DVD-R at 2x so I have no experience with 4x.

One thing I like very much about Meritline and BeAll media http://meritline.com/nebe1dv45010.html is that that they specifically say what mechanisms the media will work in. The BeAll DVD-R media (but 2x DVD-R media when I bought it) has worked flawlessly for me in both Pioneer/Apple SuperDrive mechanisms.

The one problem with a cakebox full of media is that after burning you need a DVD case for it. Meritline offers combo deals here http://meritline.com/codebedv4x4g.html

Last, don't purchase too many. The price continues to decrease. k
