View Full Version : Formac Studio vs Miglia Take 2

Was wondering if anyone has experience with either of these two analog -> DV solutions? Our lab has a number of analog video cameras and I used to use an Aurora Fuse card in my G4/533 under OS 9 but since I've migrated to OS X (10.2.2) the Aurora hasn't been used and it's frankly, annoying to have to reboot into OS 9 to get the Aurora to function again (and even then - that's hit and miss). I was thinking that I could use either the Formac or the Miglia to take an analog signal and fire it right into the FW port and then use iMovie to capture my data...

I looked at this http://www.macworld.com/2001/08/reviews/converters.html and this http://www.macworld.com/2002/09/reviews/advc.html and settled on the ADVC.

The ADVC was less expensive, and if you search, is even more inexpensive. There was a version of OSX that the ADVC did not work with but I've tried it in OS9.2.2 and 10.1.5 and 10.2.2 and it works just fine with iMovie. But the Formac was very tempting. Watch out with the Formac. They have a new model out and some of the older models are still selling online. k

Thanks Kaye,.. I'll keep my eyes out for some deals. The Miglia I can get from a local dealer - haven't seen any of the Formacs around here but I'll see what I can dig up ...

I also saw that Pyro is coming out with something similar - but it won't be released until the new year?.
