I have a iBook 500mhz running MacOSX with updates current.

After using Sherlock and going to Internet Exploer or any other program , sherlock unexpectenly quits. Quits everytime after using and in background. Don't have any idea where to start on figuring the why or solution. Anybody have any ideas?

Create a new userid with fresh preferences and see.
Run 'sbin/fsck -y' on startup into single user mode.
run Prefs Overload 4.1.1 and have it check for corrupt or damaged preferences.

I'm going to assume that you have adequate quality RAM, don't use the reset button to restart etc.

When you have a clean install, create a disk image of 2GB and then 'clone' OS X system to the image so you have a clean backup copy if needed. Backup to FireWire or something. Try using CarbonCopy Cloner (but there can be issues with FW drives some times).

There is an Apple KB on how how to backup your preferences to a file, delete the preference folder, so that you are starting fresh. OSXFAQ.com had this also.

See this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464

I'm running 10.1.3 on my G4/450/AGP and have had the same problem. This was the first, and only app to crash since installing a few weeks ago. It also crashes frequently.

I am hoping that there is simply a bug fix that can be applied - it seems like a waste to reinstall the whole system for one (small) flakey utility.

A handy utility is DIRECT DL LINK Pacifist (http://homepage.mac.com/csrstka/Pacifist.dmg) which lets you extract and install single applications from packages, such as the "Essentials.pkg" on the install CD for OS X. I copied Essentials to my hard drive to always have it available.

MacFixit OS X Library (http://www.macfixit.com/library/osxu.shtml)

Pref Overload 4.12 will examine your preference files for being corrupt also.
