View Full Version : OSX, deeply disapointed!

Ok folks. a week ago I decided to jump on the OSX bandwagon, installed it on a new partion ( 10.01 on 533MP/ 1.5 gig ram) and played with it a week or so.
My findings: Classic apps emulation: a joke, takes ages to startup "Classic" and half of them not running and taking classic enviroment down. The ones that do not crash immediately have all kinds of quirks, pull down menus and dialog boxes not responding to the mouse position correctly, window scroll not working or quirky. OSX itself: slow and sluggish windows resizing, slow window scrolling, I believe all caused by the quartz eye candy stuff, not adequately supported by hardware accelaration. Furthermore absolute lack of sufficient driver and application support by third parties even in this stage. Where I had hopes Apple was only losing on the HW battlefront, if they're not pulling their act. together real soon they're gonna lose this one too. Not to speak of the so called "improved" UI. It's not possible to get some serious work done with it at this stage. Damn, just give me classic with smp and protected memory and I'm completely satisfied. Sorry about the rant but I had to get this of my chest and I'm seriously thinking of sending it back and ask for a $120 refund.

That's why I can't get excited about it. You can't do real work with it yet and they had better hurry.

My brother-in-law loves it. He a UNIX freak anyway. He just bypasses Aqua and heads for the command line. The core is cool.

I like it. OS 9.x looks boring after using OS X for a while. Classic sucks and I do not use it. BBedit, Interarchy, Freehand are all OS X compatible, all I need now is a good email client like Mailsmith and I will jump the fence with my laptop.

10.01 is much faster. Disabling the bouncing in the dock launches programs 10 fold faster. The animation was cool the first time, I need to work now. Kinda worried about the battery drain issue when the machine is asleep in OS X.

Will not switch over on my DP533 since that is my work horse. Run too many apps, and OS X compatibility is too far away especially with Quark.

Hmm..

After a bit of tweaking, my classic works great. It's almost faster than OS X on my box, actually. Get rid of everything unnecessary, turn of non-essential extentions, etc. There's an article somewhere on http://www.macosxhints.com that details all of this.

When I first installed X it was on its own partition, but it was using my main MacOS 9.1 partition to run classic. This didnot work very well.

So I did a complete reisntall -
Installed 9.1
Installed X and updated to 10.0.1
Installed the DEV tools

It works fairly good, but QT 5 keeps killing the sound. I can run most my apps off classic and it works fairly good, but I NEED SOUND http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I also need to figure out the file sharing in X and if AppleTalk FS can work. X has a lot of promise though and its graphics engine (quarts) is years ahead of what everyone else is doing.

well....once I quit trying to run it on a beige G3 and put it on a New World machine, I realized that Apple really did try hard to extend OSX to as many folks and as many machines as feasible. I found it barely usable on a beige G3.

on Jorge's old Yose....now heavily upgraded and renamed Berserker.....OSX is actually USABLE. On an iMac....it is darned close to being usable.

like Jorge, once a few more apps and drivers are released, I very well may transition completely. The big ones are there: BBEdit, Interarchy, Fetch, GraphicConverter....AppleWorks is fine for now, until Office for X is released.....I, too, hesitate to rely on Mail....what's the word on a native version of Outlook or Entourage? I know IE5.1 is scheduled for release this Summer.....and that's fine....but I'm a little skeptical of Mail. Maybe I need to actually use it for longer than a few minutes.

anyway....I'm surprised it worked so poorly for you, Ton. Did you remember to install the Developer package, and optimize? It helps. You also need to use the Software Update feature to update X....it just keeps getting better. Once Photoshop is finally ported....hmmmm.

FWIW, if I see Classic starting up, I kill it. If something I need isn't yet carbonized, I move on. I'm impressed that Classic works at all. Now, I'm just waiting for the rest of my apps to be updated.

UPDATE:
YOSE500MG3 w/RADEON & V3-3K

With my update to 10.0.3 I havent seek the sound die yet! http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I wasnt able to install the DEV tools on my YOSE because the doohicky icon to click for the admin krap was forgotten and tiny http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
For some reason the build # is not right on my YOSEG3 http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
I finally figured out how to get the V3-3K working http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It seems that the V3 makes the YOSE highly UNSTABLE in X. I just crashed about 5 times trying to see how I could get it to crash http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Normally the video on the Voodoo is blank. What I did was to keep the 17" Voodoo monitor off until the startup screen for X came up (where it has the progress bar). Turning on the monitor connected to the V3 yields a signal!

Crash #1
I did not go with the recommend resolutions because this only yeilded 1024x768 on a 17" dislpay. This IS NOT the stoneage and the monitor defaulted to 1152x870 @ 75hz anyway. I tried going to 1280x1024x75hz. The monitor went out of sync and never came back. Of course the main display went solid blue - BlueSCREEN OF DEATH http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/crossbones.gif I was unable to hit the return to get out of this (or any other key - my keyboard & mouse were gone).

Crash #2
Learning from my previous lesson, I set the resolution to 1024x768 @ 60hz an confirmed this setting. It worked. Then I attempted 1280x1024 @60hz. The screen stayed in sync fine, but X couldnt find its A-hole from a hole in the ground... the color wheel just kept on spinning FOREVER (>2min) so I rebooted with the restart key on the CPU.

Crash #3
I tested out the screen saver fine. Its slow, but not nearly as slow as when running a ATI RAGE128PRO + ix3D UltimateRez. I then decided to try sleep mode. It went to sleep fine and almost came out fine, but I lost my USB mouse & keyboard. Nothing responded to anything I tried. I can not believe how easy it is to kill USB on a Mac running X http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/eek.gif I bet this is why my early efforts to get out of the out-of-sync monitor failed. It does give you this option - like the old Mac OS, but it seems Apple has a long way to go. I realize the Voodoos are not supported, but I wouldnt think it would be all that hard to add in some generic monitor support - like with Classic. X is SUPPOSED to be an upgrade, right?

Here is the kicker

Crash #4

Not sure you could actually call this a crash. The OS does not load (this h as happened to me before) - it starts out with the color wheel, but when the X progress bar should appear, it dumps into a grey screen. GREY SCREEN OF DEATH!-) I guess it could be a kernal panic... that darn kernal is pretty chicken s#it.

Does anybody know of a way to get into a boot drive (graphic) window (say via open firmware) or know the commands to select a boot drive/partition via OF?

I got out of this before using the tried and true method of kicking the krap out of it, but I dont want to do that every time. Its not like these things grow on trees ;-)

Also, before this I was seriously considering going with a DUAL RADEON PCI config. Originally my main issue against this was that my ONE-MONTH-OLD RADEON is starting to make some HIDEOUS noises.

Since I can sort of get the voodoo to work I was hopeing it would be stable. Isnt X supposed to be stable???? X doesnt like to crash and there is no DFA for it. Furthermore my YOSE aint in a good position for me to open it up and force it to boot off the only drive connected (I installed 9.1 on the Cheetah connected to the AdaptecU2b card).

So, I am again contemplating getting another PCI RADEON for the YOSE. Anybody try this? Is it stable? How does X react when you add hardware?

Thanks for taking time to read my X diaries? Any wisdom or knowledge form the gurus would be appriciated.

I havent even tested FIREWIRE yet... O' boy.

I'm running a Yose with three Radeons installed, and a slew of FireWire stuff attached. Works fine.

Rarely crashes. I think I crashed it once or twice.

I would definitely do the Dev optimization routine, and then use the software update feature to update X.

You will also find, if you surf into your Utilities folder, that there is indeed a DFA-type application. I forget what it is called, but it does work, FWIW.

Ditto. Give me a good beige Mac with SCSI. I will never use X. This dual boot stuff and line commands fixing is killing me. Isn't this why we hate Win/DOS?
There, at least now you know how I feel about that!

Isn't this why we hate Win/DOS?

Not that I'm an Unix guy, but at least BSD is a STABLE VERSION of DOS! http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I always remember Scotty, in Star Trek IV and how PRIMITIVE the MOUSE is. I've often thought of a x86 as a rhue goldberg machine... it is full of contradictions because we are a nation of cheapskates http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/eek.gif

Penny Wise, Pound Foolish... is this a rant?

Apple is working... they may just get DVD playback by MWNY this month, or at least set a date. Funny how most people seem to think one should watch DVD on a TV, but when Apple doesnt have it in their OS, EVERYONE b!tches.

Well, mag if rumors are correct, the slowest G4 will be the 733Mhz model... maybe dual 933Mhz are around the corner?
