View Full Version : CDDrive not working

06-04-2001, 01:04 PM
After Installing OS 9.1 onto a Power Computing Power Center Pro 210, its CD drive stopped working. I can detect it in the System Profiler, but disks will not mount. The driver version for the CDdrive is not available in the profiler. May tehre be an extension conflict? I have tried more than one CD.

Any suggestions?

you are probably running into a problem with your CD drivers.

Power Computing machines shipped with CD-ROM Toolkit drivers from FWB. These drivers are old, at this point, and very likely are not fully compatible with MacOS 9.1.

you have several options available, I would think:

1. replace the third-party CD-ROM with an Apple-branded unit which will work with Apple drivers.
2. install a "hacked" Apple driver which may support, at least partially, your CD-ROM.
3. update CD-ROM Toolkit from FWB to a current revision.
4. install an alternative "third-party" set of drivers like Intech CD-ROM SpeedTools.

others will be along shortly to jump in with their opinions, I'm sure.

I'm sure scottw would have some CD driver advice...just kidding everyone. http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Anyway, the Intech software was the key to solving all of my CD-Rom and CDRW on my PCP210.

They have a demo version available from their website http://www.intechusa.com which will let you try before you buy (from the gurus, of course). Upgrades are free.

I installed 8.6 and installed the original CD drivers, and removed the factory apple ones and everything works now. It was all becasue I did not read an alert about conflicting extensions.

Had the same problem w/ OS 9.1 on my PTP225 / G3/500 machine - the NEC drive was there but wouldn't mount. It was an older 8 X drive so I just put in the 12X CD-R from my 7300 - I had replaced them earlier with Plextor 40X drives and ran them with the Intech tools

Anyways - the Apple branded drive works fine w/ stock OS 9.1 - I have the Intech drivers and I suppose I could install them if, for some reason, I wanted to get that NEC drive up and running.

phew, I'm still steamed by that guy, UP.

I guess I overreacted, but heck: maybe I can fire myself.

yeah....good idea!

Nah, he was annoying. I'm not sure he was "asshole" annoying, but he did jump to negative assumptions without supporting evidence. And that last post of his was just rude. I suspect he posted it in ire at the previous message, which wasn't even from a Moderator, so he completely mis-targeted his anger--unjustified though it (his anger) was. That kind of behaviour is immature and deserving of a good thwacking with a newspaper.

Besides it's been a long time since we've had so much excitement around here.

What was that other guys name? b4g or something. Now that was entertaining!

i was a little taken aback that he attacked you guys too....i never should have posted what i did...i looked at it for about 5 minutes before hittingthe send button...i thought it was a pretty tempered response. And then when he referenced the whole KKK thing i figured i was wasting my time even responding to it. I mean the guy claims to be a modererator in several mac forums....i can't imagine any of you guys popping into a forum for the first time and trashing the hosts*L*

I offer up my sincere apologies for mouthing off where it wasn't needed or asked for.

Dude, don't even worry about it. It warmed our hearts to see such an avid Klan supporter jumping in on our behalf. (heavy sarcasm with respect to scottw's characterization of tm311's nick as racist)

He started a new thread to bitch, so I reamed him a new one. It's a good read, and it basically states that I cannot stand him being a retard AND bashing the moderators' motivation.

We appreciate your candor with scott, and trust me, he's not a big loss.

We're after the high-dollar RAID clients anyway, right, mag? http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Selling Intech is not exactly a phat-margin way to make money... He must've failed econ along with charm school.

For what it's worth, I'm with mactheripper.

tm311 your response was fine and much more restrained than many people would have written.

I "lurk" on about a half dozen forums or so, but this is the only one I actually post on. It's certainly because of the people that are here. Frankly, I'm amazed that I'm close to 100 posts. I never really seem to have anything to add.

trag, you're absolutely right. He wasn't "asshole" annoying.

I really need to go take a break, and not be so quick on the draw.

I gotta tell you, though, it really pissed me off that he implied you guys were just trying to sell stuff.

As if that would even work as a strategy!

FWIW, I regret my profanity. I wish I had better manners.

Well, I see someone on high has cleansed the pallette of all scottw-posted threads with the cgi equivalent of ginger for sushi, so we can rest easy.

mag, I support use of profanity when chastising vicious users. Sometimes nothing else gets the point across. That's why one should always use profanity around aircraft maintainers; they need it to comprehend.

who was it that said we hadn't seen this much excitement in awhile?

I'm thinking maybe never before!

I go to the hospital, take the doggie to her appointments, run some errands, and have a shortened work day, and look what I come back to!

maybe we can all get back to just taking care of customers and Mac owners.

maybe not. I think more fireworks are coming...
