View Full Version : permissions for Unix Files?

OK, this may be a simple case of RTFM, but this forum needs a little more activity. http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Is there a short answer to what the proper/default permissions and ownership are for all those folders and the files they may contain that come (free! no extra charge!) with OS X Server, like:

Network Trash Folder
Temporary Items

Typical ownership of the above:

Owner:________Admin, with RW
Group:________varies; (Admin, Nobody, Staff, some user groups), some R, some RW
Everyone:_____varies; some R, some None, some RW

Because of the mess of updates that reach all the way back through Server 10.1.1 to ASIP 4.something, my learn-as-you-blow-stuff-up training, and a rather severe addiction to the "copy these privledges to the enclosed items" button http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif , I don't trust what they are set to now. Currently at 10.2.3, but getting ready to update and would like to get this right first.

Frankly, I am impressed at how well this Server is working considering the neglect it has seen; very impressive!

And while I am asking, any ideas as to where the folders in question should/should not be (and why) would be helpful as well. http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Though I have not looked very hard yet, at first glance they seem to be randomly planted in some of the shared user files. Can they be move/duplicated/deleted?

Anybody seen a good book on Server? I think there are only a few of us who check in on a regular basis around here running Server, but I gotta beleive our numbers will grow, with Xserve and all...

TIA, X Server gurus!

Update: OK....must be time to take that Server class....
