View Full Version : Run a Primary Name Server in OS 9.2.2?

I've recently switched DSL ISP's and my new ISP charges me $ to have them act as my Primary and Secondary Name Server for me to host my own web site. But, they do allow ME to be the Primary Name Server for free. So naturally, I would like to do it the free way. Is it possible to have OS 9.2.2 set up as a Name Server on one of my B&W G3's? Or do I need OS X? Or better yet, do I need OS X Server to do this? If I can do it in OS 9.2.2, is there a specific Apple or third party software that anyone has tried? Thanks in advance. J

Take a look at one of the threads and comments by Jazzbo under "Networking." I think you may need or want to find another product that does the DNS for you (so if you have dynamic IP you could still have a static IP).

I'm sure you can Sustainable Software's IPNetRouter (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=2216&db=mac) might help get you started in that direction.

Visit versiontracker (http://www.versiontracker.com/), select the MacOS tab at the top, then load DNS into the top nav-bar search field and press Go. Apparently there are a lot of server apps available.

BTW, it comes standard, ready to be configured and launched, in OSX, though you've got Terminal work and more to learn along the way!
