The directions in my 7600 manual are for an early OS, so I did a search on Apple's pages and found that for Sys 8.5 - 9 you need to turn off all extensions except File Exchange. Then you are supposed to push the Option-Command keys while closing the Extensions Mgr. window. Tried it, but it didn't work. I know I can use Tech Tool or NUM 6, but would really like to know how to do it in OS 9.0.4.

Anyone know the answer?

I have always just held down the command and option keys during reboot.

Me too. Another source, from the Finder and the menu Bar, select Help -> Help Center (or whatever it is for 9.0.4) and search for rebuild desktop. No mention in 9.2.1 about turning off extensions. k

Make the desktop files visible; move to trash; reboot. Also, conflict catcher does a full rebuild.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I am sure one of these will work for me.

Merry Christmas to all!

Gregory:

How do you make the Desktop files visible? Am using OS 9.1, but I'm quite "green". I'd like to make sure I don't get a build up of hidden useless garbage over time.
