A Mac-using pal, non-technical, is at 8.1 on his 7700 (or something) and cannot use his new HP printer without 'at least 8.5'. I've sent him my 8.5 install disk and 8.6 updater, but the 8.5 disk is an unofficial copy from Apple, not in the best of condition, and his 7700 won't boot from it.

The official Apple line is that 8.5 is no longer available. Are there any sources of clean 8.5 install disks out there, or is his only option to buy 9.0/9.1 and lots more memory?

OS 8.5-6 is a hard item to find new. It comes and goes.

Sometimes it can be found at ebay.
http://www.megamacs.com/ might have it available, it is still listed on the website.

We have located a copy here in the UK for my friend. Actually, I got hit by this too, as I tried to buy 8.5 last Fall just after Apple had withdrawn it and was told I had to have 9.0. This forced a long and expensive upgrade path that failed to produce the expected increases of either speed or stability. Still not totally resolved, long story but I bought a Cube/500 instead. Either I have great faith in Apple or I'm a shmuck.

i had a similar thing happen on my OS9 install disl...i could mount it.but i could not boot from it because it was scratched or something.....so i made a disk copy of it and burned it as a Mac volume....now it works fine.

I had a scratched OS 8.6 disk that wouldn't boot my G3. I called customer service and whined a bit and they offered to replace it for $25 even though it was long out of warranty. You have to be on file as the original owner.
