View Full Version : The Batsignal

Hello moderators,

I would like to know how the batsignal works? Not how to use it, mind you, but the mechanics of using it.

If Ricks invokes the Batsignal to Kaye does Kaye receive an email saying "Look at this post" or does he have a private forum generated web page that these Batsignal messages show up on? When Ricks invokes it does he click a link and then choose a Moderator to send it to?

When someone sends me a bat signal, I receive an email with boilerplate stuff telling me who sent it, usually C8, and a link to the forum thread. The invoking procedure is in how the bat signal is phrased. k

I'm honored someone noticed... http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I hacked the posting code (all Perl) that parses the post and does things like replace smilies, strip executable lines so you can't hack in, etc. The Bat Signal loop scans for a particular phrase with specific capitalization, deletes the word, then copies the next word and sends an email to word@macgurus.com.

This way, anyone could invoke it, but it will only email people with a macgurus email address (moderators), so that our server doesn't overload.

The email it sends looks like this:
Yo! magician has just flashed you the MacGurus Moderator Batsignal. You may be an Expert of Choice for this thread.

Thread Title: test thread... do not bother to read

Thread Location: Forum TalkBack forum of MacGurus Upgrades Forums.

This topic is located at:

Please check it out at your convenience.

Note: sender's email address is magician@macgurus.com
So all the moderator has to do is click the link in the email (assuming they are using a modern email program that allows hyperlinks), and their browser opens to the thread in question.

hope this helps...

rippin' code and staying young since 1996.

So you made this...I am impressed! but also a bit sad as I was hoping it was a (commercial) plugin or module of some sort that I could use elsewhere

You want the code? I'll send it to you; it may not help you much since it's related intimately to UBB's user db libraries, but I don't mind sharing.

Just lemme know what you want. A text credit in the comments would be nice if you take it and use it, but again, I'm not too hyper.

Thanks, but it would do me no good No UBB in the forum in question (sorry to be so cryptic but I am under something of a verbal NDA for a week ot two more)

In that case, my services as a Perl hacker are at your service, especially if you've got some loot for me... http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
