I have an older iMac with a "drawer" CD hardware. I also have a new iMac with the "slot" CD version. The CD doesn't work on the older one, and now the iMac won't boot up at all. I can't reload OS 8.6 or 9.1, etc. since it requires a CD player.
QUESTION: Is there a way I can transfer
the operating system from my new iMac
to the old one via cables? Or can I buy an external CD driver for my
USB hub and use my OS 9.1 as startup? (Your Forum comes very
highly recommended!)

Sorry, you can't boot from a USB drive. Also, unless you have MacOS X Server of the other iMac, you can't boot through the Ethernet either.

Really, your best solution is to repair or replace the CD drive. Try carefully cleaning the lens on the drive with a Q-tip and head-cleaning solution available from Radio Shack or your local stereo store.

Would Firewire target disk mode work in this case? Of course this is assuming that both your iMacs have Firewire ports. Personally, I have no idea since I've never used Firewire disk mode before, but I figured I'd just throw the suggetion out there.
