OK, I have a PB 1400 12x CD ROM module that has "issues". I can put a disk in and it either sits and spins forever, or eventually tells me that the disk in unreadable.

As it turns out, from what I read, this is a common problem with every type of PB 1400 CD ROM.

I tried:
-power manager reset
-zapping PRAM (I cant seem to get it to reboot more than once with Co-Op-P-R)
-lightly lubricating the drive rails with teflon lube
-gently cleaning off the lens (no scratches) and signal bender
-dusted it out
-tried CD Sunrise 2.2
-tried booting off a Mac OS 9 CD ROM

The disks will spin up ; I can see them spin.

When I transferred the CD Rom to another PB 1400, I got it to mount a disk...after a while...twice.... then the same problem.

I just have this feeling that this is a solvable problem.

thanks,

Since I love to hear myself talk, let me answer my own question.

I think I have found the fix for this problem.

When I take the CD ROM apart, on the underside I see a rotary dial near/on the laser head. I think this is to tune/position the beam to land on the CD. I should be able to make small changes and test. Wish me luck.

OK. Good luck!

Going to look and bid on some 1400's to get myself one. We need to stop meeting like this....

Heh Heh Heh. I dont know why, but I just decided one day to start putting a PB 1400 together. Color me strange. Its a good laptop, with some restrictions, but fun to play with. Its still a hot item though on ebay.

Im currently overclocking mine. : )

I think I solved the mystery. Either that or I accidently turned the self destruct knob to "go".

If you take the PB 1400 CD ROM apart, including the metal cover on the backside of the tray, you will notice a small rotary dial on/near the laser head.
I adjusted the dial in small increments until all of a sudden during one test, the CD ROM fired right up.
Presumably the dial is a focus/tuner for the beam. Or maybe the funny ticking sound is my demise waiting to happen.

While I cant guarantee your CD ROM will not explode with the force of a thousand suns, it worked for me. It also worked on a 3400 CD ROM a friend has.

Did you heard about the guy who was born with a golden screw in his navel? He got really curious, unscrewed it, and his ass fell off.
