View Full Version : IDE Upgrade for G4/Dual 533

I want to add a second IDE drive to my G4/Dual 533. Planning to use a 120G IBM Deskstar. What do I need to do to install? Can I just install in the mounting, connect the spare connector on the existing IDE cable and power up, or is there something else I need to do? It will NOT be the boot drive. I know what to do with SCSI, but I'm clueless about IDE.

Thanks .... Taffy.C

Just make sure one drive is jumpered as slave. It shows on the top of the drive itself usually or on the end. Drive Setup from 9.x or use Disk Utility (OS X) to format. I just got a couple 120GXP 60GB drives, one in 911 Firewire case, another internal, and they are much much better than the earlier 60GXP series drives in performance. And not much more than $1/GB ain't shabby either.

Having a PCI IDE (ATA/133 card) can make sense if you want to avoid having two drives on one channel, or want to RAID or hard RAID them.
