View Full Version : Adding 3rd IDE to G4/867

My old Western Digital firewire drive went out on me (and it was out of warranty). According to support, the problem was in the firewire board in the drive, so I ripped the IDE drive out of the casing and installed it into my G4/867 as a 2nd IDE drive (slave drive), and it worked like a charm.

But now I have a 3rd IDE drive, a Maxtor 80GB, and I want to add it to one of the empty drive bays. The Maxtor box comes with an IDE PCI card, but upon installing the card, and installing the drive, the drive refuses to show up. I don't know if it's because the PCI card is not meant for the Mac (didn't really say in the docs), or if I am doing something wrong. Any suggestions? If the Maxtor PCI card is not Mac-compatible, are there any affordable alternatives for the Mac?

Someone asked the same ? on the XLR8 forum http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif those PCI cards are PC only. You'll need to use something that is Mac or can be flashed in Mac. There are a couple of ATA/133 cards to choose from.

Hi Don,

Like Gregory said, you will need to install a host card to add more drives. Good thing is, the host cards are faster.

The Gurus sell several listed on this page:
http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/showrampage.cgi?idepagesofheck.html

They also sell a new Miglia ATA133 host card and the Miglia ATA133 Hardware RAID cards. They are not listed yet but they are in stock and you can call to order them. I believe they run $149 and $199 respectively. These are the hottest hosts made. They are manufactured by Acard and are truly plug and play on the Mac.
