View Full Version : 9600 hard drive upgrade

I've got a 9600 G3 450 (RAM: 300+) that I'm currently using for email, surfing and occasional graphic work. When I get e new system (6 months to 1 year from now) I want to make this machine a backup server and MP3 jukebox. Ripping CDs, file storage, ripping MP3s to WAVs and maybe even taking on print server and routing roles will be the things I want this machine to do.

Currently I have two 4 GB SCSI drives. I really need to drop in a larger hard drive while keeping my investment to a minimum. I was considering a Sonnet Tempo 100 with a Maxtor 60-80 GB drive. The card is about $100, and I can find a drive for about $100 if I shop around.

Any recommendations on other card/drive setups? Is ATA 100 fast enough? Would ATA 66 be too slow?

Thanks in advance.

The ATA 66 will be faster than your 4 gig scsi drives IF the scsi is the stock scsi bus in the 9600. But go for the ATA 133 anyway because speed is it's own justification!

133 sounds great. But I'm trying to keep my budget down (saving for a new system!). Will I actual benefit from the 133 speed. Does my 9600 have a limited on board bus? I've heard that older macs can have issues with video and audio files on card controlled drives. I want the fastest possible that will let me stay under $100.

Ever heard of audio issues with card controlled drives?
