Seagate is offering a 100gb Special Edition at $100+ premium over its standard 100gb, The SE has an 8mb buffer rather than 2mb; is it likely to make a real world difference? especially if it's attached to a iBook G3, 500mhz notebook,

I haven't been able to locate the drive your refering to, let me know where you saw it.

However, when Western Digital came out with their 8mb version of the Caviar it got this from Storage Review.com. Quote:
"the Western Digital Caviar WD1000BB-SE and WD1000JB are both the same thing- a special edition WD1000BB featuring an 8-megabyte buffer that easily makes it today's premiere ATA drive."

Kinda gives you the idea of what you'll get with a top Seagate product.

Ah...no Seagate, too bad. I was hoping you saw something I hadn't.

The 8mb cache on the Caviar gave it a huge bump in performance. The Storage Review article is worth your time if your interested in the drive.

Thanks for the info.
