Our setup is: AIO G3/233/sys8.6. The Maxtor 30gig drive installed roughly Jan. 99. Partitioned into five volumes: (OS/apps/docs/browsers/scratch - in that order). Used HDspeedtools to set up. Our bad: accumulation of corruption without being repaired might have caught us out...six wks ago Disc First Aid (8.52) would report problems on startup disc which it couldn't repair. Two wks ago, blinking "?" disc on startup (isolated instance), then worked fine for while.
Now, upon startup, HD will begin to spin up, followed by five clicks, spin up etc. Successfully booted machine using SCSI external JAZ (containing copy of 8.6)...can access all volumes of the Maxtor except OS volume - no clicking, works fine.
Suspect stiction might be at work...looking for advice on rescuing last few (un backed up) folders that were on desktop (hence OS volume)and Netscape mail etc. before looking for replacement drive.
Thanks so much.

Since your other partitions are mounting, your problem is not stiction. It sounds as if you either have bad blocks or a corrupted directory on your boot partition or corruption in your partition table. Do you have Norton's to run on that partition? If so, I'd suggest trying to repair it with Norton's and then backup that partition (If Norton's repaired the partition rather than the partition table.) and erase it before restoring to create a new, clean directory.

Don't have Nortons yet, but that will soon be remedied...(sigh!) another marriage saved by the MacGurus! Thanks!
