An IDE disk attached to Sonnet Tempo 66.
Is this normal?
I can initialize, write zeros with Apple's drive setup.
I can select low level format as an option, but it
doesn't seem to do the job.
Other utilities as HD speedtools or HD toolkit,
gives me an error if I try to low level format.
I wonder if it is normal.

Tempo is 3.1.2 firmwared, IDE disk is from Fujitsu.

Thanks,

update the firmware on the Sonnet card.

if that doesn't do it, swap the cable. If that doesn't fix it, swap the drive.

you could always try to initialize the drive on the built-in IDE circuitry, as well, just to see if the drive is truly defective or not.

magician,

I think 3.12 is the latest firmware so I am ok with that.
Since I am using an oldworld mac, I do not have a way to check it
with myself.

I've heard that beginning from certain versions of Apple's Drive setup,
it seems that it won't let users to low level format an IDE disk
attached on a AEC6260 cards even you can select "low level" in
the options, except with some versions of old Turbomax cards.

Is it true?
I do not seem to have any problems even I can't format it,
but would like to start using this new disk by formatting it,
not initializing it.

Somebody with more IDE experience will have to step in and correct me if this is wrong, but I don't think any driver will do a true low level format on an IDE drive in the same way that a SCSI drive is formatted. The Apple driver fakes it and the other other drivers handle the drive because they are fooled into treating it as a SCSI device.....until you try to do a low level format which won't work. IDE drives are only subject to high level (logical) reinitialization after the factory format.

MacMikester,

Thanks for the info.
Some of the other sources indicated exactly what you have said,
so I am starting to believe that I am not in the
exceptions list, feeling much better.

Fujitsu drives don't like to be formatted with the Apple drive setup, you need a third party driver/formatter like Intech or FWB
