View Full Version : PTP 225-> Problems with PCI slot (I think...)

This is my story (& please excuse my poor enlish) http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/dance.gif
What I have : PTP 225 + 256 memory (intervalved 60ns) + 4Gb hard drive (scsi 50pin) + jazz, zip&CDbuner (all internal) + OS 9.04. Everything going OK.
I upgraded the pocessor with XLR8 match carrier + XLR8 ZIF G3-500Mhz (removed the mother board cache). Etherything whent smoth thanks to your advice. Running at 500Mhz with less crashes than before... Didn't try faster speeds, I'm happy with 500Mhz & temperature is betwen 28/32?C. http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Aded an XJR8 Usb car & point & scrol mouse. Works OK.
I control my drives with CD speedtools 5,5 + HD speedtools 3 (great advice)

NOW fot the problems : I want more storage!!!!
1) I tried an Adaptec 29160 + LVD cheeta 9go (internal)
I can't instal a big file on it or system 9 : many loses of data (Norton 5,03 is going crazy). If I run 100 Photos with graphicconverter to make tumbnails the system frezez & I have to restart the hard way. http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/mad.gif
I tryed with 2 other diferent HD (another cheeta 9go 80 pins + adapter & a atlas 9go 68pins) & the results are the same...
2) So I dicides to buy a Tempo sonnet + IBM ultra Ata100 45Go
Same problems : If I clean instal or instal the system from the CD (with extentions off) they are instalation problems & some files are corupted (I firtst instal OS9 & then upgrade to 9,04 : the instaler tells me they are files missig or damaged in my system, & not always the same...
Belive me, I have tried over & over!!!!!! http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/eek.gif

Now I know it is not the card, so I tried using FWB HDtoolkit 4.
(you never know....) http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/confused.gif
with FWB, it is not even possible to take over the drive & format it : "an error occured ....." & it stops....
So it is not software... http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif
So the only alternative is the PCI slots.... ????
But with one sould I use or not?????
the video card is in botom slot (n?1?), the adaptec29160 is in top (n?6), the XLR8 USB is in 5 & the tempo is in 3.
I'm going to try swithching everything but befor I do (& go crazy), any advice?
Or did I completly miss somthing... http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/confused.gif

send back the Sonnet, the IDE drive(s), and the Adaptec. The Adaptec, in particular, is known to be problematic in vintage machines.

get an LVD Cheetah or Barracuda, not an 80-pin model but one with a 68-pin interface and a part number ending in LW, and then use a Miles2. Life will be much better.

Also download the free upgrade to 5.6.0 to Intech's CD/DVD SpeedTools. Don't trash the User's Manual; you need it to look up the password. ftp://ftp.macgurus.com//ftp/intech_stuff/ .
