View Full Version : PowerBase 180 upgrading(???)

Can somebody tell me what my basic choices are for upgrading my PowerBase desktop cheaply? I really think this CarrierZif Mpe stuff sounds too hi-tech for my student budget (tell me if I'm wrong about this) It seems I might be better off getting one of these Newertech motherboards that are compatible, apparently, and are still available, unlike the boards that have been discontinued by those manufacturers that remain in business. I have been scouring the web til my eyeballs are spinning and I still don't feel like I have a handle on what my options really are. I am trying to spend as little as possible on this...no more than $175, and preferably less. 300mhz is fine though I've noticed that Sonnet only has 350mhz and up if I'm understanding correctly(?)

I can't find anything we have for a PowerBase that would fit your budget. Most affordable I see:

MACh G3 366MHz Carrier, 1MB L2 @ 244MHz $174.99 ea but you would need to remove the ZIF from the Carrier and purchase CarrierMPe. http://www.macgurus.com/beta/showrampage.cgi?liquidations.html and CarrierMPe, card-only, separate ZIF required $119.99 ea here http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/showrampage.cgi?xlr8boards2cz.html

Crescendo G3/L2 400MHz/512k 54/55/64/6500/6360/TAM/PB $249.99 ea http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/showrampage.cgi?sonnet.html

OWC has some Newer Technology MAXpowr L2 CPU Upgrades for the Base for $160-180. k
