View Full Version : FWB Toolkit and Plextor CD-RW?

I'm planning on getting the internal Plextor CD-RW drive, and have FWB CD-ROM Toolkit. Will this be sufficient, or do I also need to get Speedtools with it? (I plan to add the Plextor and keep using my present CD-ROM as well.)

Also, does Plextor make a combo CD/DVD ROM drive?

Thanks

The version of FWB must be compatible with your OS version. you mentioned neither.

I have OS 9.0.4 and Toolkit v. 2.3.2. They're both working, so I assume they're compatible.

I assume since you didn't comment, that Plextor doesn't make a cd/dvd rom drive?

Assume nothing! FWB CDTK 2.3.2 is not even compatible with OS 8. You are looking for a train wreck. OS 9.x requires FWB CDTK 4.x for compatibility. You would be much better off getting Intech's CD/DVD SpeedTools 5.7 here http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/showrampage.cgi?intechsoftware.html for $38.99 and free upgrades for life.

if your machine is IDE, the best driver to use is the apple one, for the moment... if your interface is SCSI, then CDST is worth purchasing; the FWB software doesn't support a LOT of CDRW drives, they're slow, check their site... had a lot of problems with the Plextor 16x10x40 IDE in my B&W machine and finally settled on using the apple driver and it's very relieable. CDST is very useful, however; so, I'm hoping for a firmware upgrade from Plextor or whatever happens softwarewise that gives me compatibility eventually.

We need Magician to answer the Plextor question because I don't know.

Louie et al -

Thanks for the info. How is it that my cd-rom is working if th FWB isn't compatible? It must be working under a different driver? How do I know what driver is driving it (system profiler says v.5.0, but not which one)? I guess I'd better uninstall the FWB.

Thanks again.

Incompatibilities sneak up on you from behind, blind-side you and cause disk/system corruption. FWB 2.x dates back to 96/97 for System 7.x. FWB 3.x was for OS 8.x and FWB 4.x is for OS 9.x. I think they are up tp 4.5 now.

I just looked at the drivers for my two CD devices listed in ASP and I don't know what they represent. The don't match SpeedTools 5.7 which I use.

Plextor does not make a CD/DVD-ROM drive.

interestingly enough, ASP says my Plextor UltraPlex40X is using driver version 5.6. There is no doubt that I am running CD/DVDST 5.7. I'm looking at the control panel.

i definitely recommend getting a more current version of CDT, or better, transitioning to Intech CD/DVDST. Remember: you can download a free demo (http://www.IntechUSA.com/CDDemo.html?297,25), confirm that you love it, and then buy it here (http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/showrampage.cgi?intechsoftware.html).

I'm using CD/DVD SpeedTools 5.7 in my Pismo for the CD/DVD-ROM and ASP also reports 5.6 for the driver version.

Magician/Louie -

The Speedtools are already ready for me to download. Can't wait for the drive to get here.

Thanks again!
