Hi People,

I saw your site via a link from barefeats.com regarding rocketfire pci
cards, and wondered if you could offer me any advice on upgrading my present system.

I want to be able to run semi-pro level music recording software, build a
website, edit video images, and upload them to the site. I am a guitar
teacher wanting to put my business online, as well as continue my studio
recording and pre-production set-up.

This all needs to be done on a tight budget (my old jaguar XJ6 just faied
its m.o.t. rather impressively, hence I won't be buying a whole new mac just yet !).

Please note my mac has two pci slots available only if I throw out the
at-present unused ethernet card. Is this card going to be any use to me in my game plan?... Should I bin it or keep it ?

1). Will rocketfire (or any other similar cards) you can suggest have any major issues with my current setup?
2). Will all usb and firewire devices run with these cards?
3). Anything newer already out there that would solve my problems?
4). I also am in the market for a seriously large and fast hard drive......
- removable is good, as when I'm away I can just take the drive with me for security, but I would consider in-place drives.
5). Am I kidding myself that this approach will get me a workable set-up ?

If you are able to help with any of these rather naive questions (only had the mac 6 months) I would be very grateful and, assuming you're interested in playing the guitar, gladly swap you an online guitar lesson for your time (I have quick ears and can work anything out for you).

Best Regards,

Isn't the 6400 kinda slow for digital music editing? One thing I would do if I were into music editing is check out the digidesign web site. They have a free download of their ProTools software and system specs...

well....let's see.

one of the first things you'll encounter is a problem with some FireWire/USB cards in that particular machine. It's a bridge problem.

of the two FireWire/USB cards that we endorse, the OrangeMicro (http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/obj_show_page.cgi?orange_micro.html) is probably your best bet, as they have an actual patch to fix this problem. The RATOC....i think it is just not compatible.

if you want FireWire only, you can get an XLR8. But in your case, for a combo card, the OM would probably be best.

as for drives....the EZQ drives (http://www.macgurus.com/shoppingcart/showrampage.cgi?ezquest.html) we sell work well and are very well-priced.

as for your ethernet card, hold on to it. You may get another Mac, and want to network them.

I agree with Spaz: a 6400 may be underpowered for what you want to do.
