I have been looking everywhere for a "mac displays for dummies" faq so I have to throw a question out here :

I recently got my hands on a 17" studio display with an Apple Display Connector.

It is possible to get this baby to work in my (relatively old) PCI based G4 ? I have a VGA card in there now, and I am looking into upgrading it, but not if I can't get this ADC monitor to work in it. I understand that ADC monitors require power from the video card ; can I install a new PCI card (with DVI-D output) and just use a DVI -> ADC adapter ?

Any comments would be apprectiated.

I have no clue. But check here http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n33001

Also Griffin here http://www.telalink.net/~griffin/ has two databases for matching the video card to the monitor with recommended adapter. If you call, they will give the same info.

I have a Radeon PCI which has both VGA and DVI-I monitor ports. There is a note that powered Apple monitors using the ADC (Apple Display Connector) is not supported. k

kcathode,

I pointed out this product - http://www.drbott.com/prod/DVIator.html - in this forum - http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000172.html - a few weeks ago. This DVI to ADC convertor is just what you need after upgrading to an ATI Radeon or the like and the DVIator is now shipping (it was not a few weeks ago).
