Is there a card that accelerates video and supports a DVD player? I have a beige G3 with 3 PCI slots. I have the Miles2 Ultra2 card, a ratoc firewire/usb card and the ATI VR XCLAIM 128. I am pondering a DVD player. I have read that you need a DVD controller that fits into a PCI slot. You see where I am going with this.

Thanks

Richard

I always ask this:

Why buy a video card ($100+) and a DVD drive ($???) when you can just use the video inputs and an outboard DVD player?

I assume your needs are deeper than simply playback, huh? That seems to be one of Apple's sore spots...lacking HW DVD support. I can't readily think of a solution (Wired4DVD card.....old item with questionable support), but I am sure someone will.

there is no solution.

DogSM, you actually have the best answer I have seen, which is better than mine: why use a computer to watch movies when you can get a great SONY Vega for a few hundred bucks? AND you can attach it to your Rage 128VR!

whoo!

so you can patch the firmware on your dvd rom to play region free and watch crouching tiger long before the dvd is released in the US. http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

btw...i have an oem rage 128 pci that has a dvd playback daughtercard, but my beige doesnt seem to use it. playback gets garbled if i try to do much while its going on. im not sure if the software decoder would even work if i hadnt already upgraded to a g4. im using version 2.4 of the apple dvd software (need to use tomeviewer to install and download the patch to use it on a beige). i havent tried going back to version 2.2 to see if it accesses the daughter card (thats what the original b&w used when it shipped with the 128-might work). i dont really understand why apple seems to want to keep revisions to the dvd software model specific. if i try it and it works, ill post accordingly.

there are a few of the cards in question on ebay now:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&query=rage&categoryid=&ht=1&st=0&category1=4599&maxRecordsPerPage=100&SortProperty=MetaEndSort

im fond of it...the benifit of ati hardware without their software bulls**t.

Thanks for the info. Looks like a little more research needs to be done on my part (duh) http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

batmantis00,

I think that in order to take advantage of the dvd playback daughtercard you need to use version 1.x of Apple's software. Later versions only support software decoding.

magician

that is correct.

there are updates on the Apple website. Search the TIL knowledge base for articles.

that seems rather stupid to me. why would they revise free software to make it less functional. hopefully the OS X version will be universal enough to make use of whatever resources are available-tho thats probably just wishful thinking. I havent actually used anything earlier than 2.2. how much difference is there stability and functionality wise between the revisions? maybe its worth down grading. will see what i can find on the TIL.

(after til digging)
not only is version 2.x not use the the decoder card, but 1.x is incompatible with OS 9.1. beautiful. sometimes i wonder what those guys are thinking.

Does anyone that has a new machine have a copy of DVD Player 2.5 that they could send out (just the folder from the install cd, I can extract the program)? (assuming that it's allowed) I'm also trying to get a DVD player to work.. having a compuer media center in my time apartment is much more appealing than an entertainment system and sleeping in the tub! :-)

Thanks

Isn't there a hack floating around somewhere?

Maybe help here http://www169.pair.com/lukifer/dvd.html

This stuff is outta my league. k

that Lukifer guy cracks me up. I would host his stuff for him at no charge except it would get my company sued, for sure.

i guess what i could do is, i could incorporate an off-shore trust the next time i go to the islands, then contract for webspace with an ISP there.

then i could register a domain like sue-away.com, and point it at the island webspace. Properly constructed, an off-shore trust is an independent entity, and is reponsible only for its own business. It's somewhat secure, and it is not easy to crack the shell and legally pursue affiliated companies that are not related in any way except for common corporate ownership.

we could then host anyone and anything that is somewhat controversial, right?

why not simply use mac.com, i wonder? or AOL?

I guess I just miss the old anon.penet.fi.

Maybe I'm distressed that there really is no place secure and private, anymore.

lukifer and the 3 following links have been the most useful ive found in dealing with the dvd issues. ive posted this stuff on the forum before, but since its been a while and were on the subject:
http://web.tiscali.it/thinkdifferent/
http://www.opuscc.com/download/
http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/firmware/

And even if it isn't "useful"-this has some interesting info and commentary.

Oops. I forgot this one.

Jeeze.. I think that I have just about downloaded every old-world mac dvd hack/app/extension that I could possibly use (and many that I can't)... IF I ever get this working, I am going to write a long instruction manual of all the combinations that I've seen, the pitfalls to watch for (or at least the dozen or so that I've fallen into http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif ), and give it to you guys. I'm sure this this will keep comming up.

Mag: Would putting all of these things (including the apple software) on the FTP be any infringement that could get you sued? I've collected these things from many web sites and it would be nice to have a central repository. I'm not talking about the DVD ripping/encoding stuff, just the things to actually get the damn drives working..

Also on a semi-related note, because of a lack of space, I have been forced back into using only one monitor (sigh) so it will be a while until I get another chance to sort out the multiple ati vid card/radeon slow down problem. Damn. I hate just one monitor.

Happy trails!

I actually have a Mac DVD software decoder that is totally independent of the ATI hardware here, I wanted to try to get it goin with my Macs with 3dfx cards. If I've got time I'll see if I can post it up somewhere.

For the real hardware DVD decoding cards, theres the Wired4DVD PCI cards going for $89-99 I think from OWC I think. Good luck with your DVDs

eric, go ahead and put them all in one folder, and upload to the FTP site. One of us will cull thru and see if it presents any danger.

it sounds like you are doing some real good work there--and I appreciate it, as eventually, I'm going to want to actually watch DVDs on some of the vintage machines here, too.

now, don't get me started on the Radeon with Rage 128....i ultimately reverted Beast back to three Rage 128, with one Rage 128VR, and dual Nexus, and he's scrolling wicked-fast again.

on Berserker, i transitioned to three Radeon.

one of them, the one in the 66MHz PCI slot, is actually sorta fast.

the other two....not.

so that's it.

I'm trying to get some Formac boards in, but that's another issue.

I'll try to post all the software tonight, and will start writing as soon as I can start watching Martix :-) I'll be hitting my machine hard tonight after work.. have about a half dozen other ideas to try now. Maybe one of them is the magic bullet.

Talk to you all later.

I'll be posting an updated and overhauled video section on the site shortly.
