from the talk on this board i'm getting that the radeon is kind of a dud--

but it seems the best option for me for a 2nd monitor on my dual g4 500
(actually would go in pci for 1st monitor leaving the agp for my apple display pallette monitor)

thoughts about pci radeon on dual g4 500? how does its stability with os10 look?

j,

I don't think Radeon PCI is a dud. It is the second fastest still supported video card that I have tried, ProFormance 3+ 32MB being first. But, Radeon PCI tests that I did were in a PTP G3-500 running 540/270 with a 54MHz bus and mostly 50ns RAM. My feeling, your box with much faster RAM and bus speed, Radeon PCI would fly.

Plus I tested with the included first edition of its software/firmware. There is an update, but I have not been able to try it because my PTP is at Initio for their work on another issue. I would think that OS10 would not be a problem because Apple offers the Radeon AGP as an option and now the ATI update software is for both Radeon PCI and AGP. First edition of the software was specific to which card, AGP or PCI, you have. k

I am running a PCI radeon on my dual 533 and like it. Have the Nvidia AGP plus the ATI board.

You both also have a faster PCI bus. k

I love the 4th PCI slot. Just right for my Igniter card. http://macgurus.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll let you folks know how it goes for me with my dinky dual 500.

since i use the machine primarily for photoshop, i think i'll see a big gain in redraw and will be pleased.

i'll be sure to add to this post my reaction(s) to the card. damn, though-- $179 for one of the fastest cards is pretty damned good. remember the radius cards? Ha!

Radius cards? Yeah, right now I'm running a NuBus Power 120 with Radius Thunder IV GX*1600 which was $3995 new. Fortunately, I didn't pay that and have found that same card for as little as $89. k

gotta gently point out....$179 for a Radeon is MUCH LESS than what Ingram-Micro charges vendors at wholesale! If you can get them for that price, do it!
