Is there any news on the PCI Radeon card? Is it shipping yet? Has anybody heard how it works?

ATI has become notorious for delays after announcing cards. Kaye bought one from them at MacWorld SF. Here's his test results http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000061.html .

magician,

New Radeon 1.1.1 for both AGP and PCI is in the Gurus ftp upload folder. Can't try it until the PTP returns. k

yeah, got the sw, and moved it into the ATI directory on the FTP site.

looks like I'll be posting Radeon PCI on the main site tomorrow, after I kill the PowerLogix pages and update EZQ pricing. Just finished the updated XLR8 pages, including Velocity and CarrierMPe.

it took some time.

then I have a bunch of RAID quotes to handle.

sigh.

So what's going on with this card? Should I continue to hold my breath or just go for the Formac ProFormance 3 and get on with my life? My primary application is Photoshop. http://www.macgurus.com/ubb/confused.gif

sorry about that. I've been procrastinating about posting those boards on our site because I'd actually have to spend some time in front of my machine this weekend.

I'll try and get them up tonight, or tomorrow. Radeon PCI is shipping now, and we will begin shipping them this week. We have Radeon AGP on the shelf already. We're looking at around $200 after the rebate. The rebate coupons are on the FTP site in the ATI directory.

Fun,

Either would work well IMO. Macworld just recently ran a test of both. Did you see that? BTW, their test of the Formac card was a ProFormance3+ 16MB PCI card, the Radeon was AGP which is of course faster than the Radeon PCI. If I am spending your money, and you want a Formac card, my preference is the 32MB version. The 32MB version is faster than the Radeon PCI in 2D and 3D applications. If you do 3D games, my guess is the Radeon PCI is faster. The Radeon cards require OS9 or higher. And they recently updated the software which I haven't tried yet. k

Wow guys--thanks for the quick replies! magi: I didn't mean to rush you or anything. By all means enjoy your weekend. The world can wait another day. kaye: I've been falling behind in my spending lately so your help in this regard is much appreciated, still, given that the Formac 32MB board (with goggles) is almost twice the cost of the Radeon while only marginally faster with 2D I feel inclined to wait a few more days.

I don't think this is marginal (from a post):

PTP G3-540/270 with ATI Radeon PCI, ProFormance3+ 32MB.
Both Radeon and PF3+ tested in a Bandit slot (slot4).

2D, MacBench 5, 21" monitor, 1152x870xMillions:
OS8.6__, ProForm3+ Graphics-4129, Pub Graphics-2820
OS9.0.4, RadeonPCI Graphics-3024, Pub Graphics-2236

At 1024x768xThousands:
ProForm3+ Graphics-5437
RadeonPCI Graphics-4134

Price difference is huge, but I think you get what you pay for in the PF3+ 32MB. Radeon PCI is certainly no slouch and the updater may accelerate 2D more. My PTP is elsewhere at the moment so I can't try OS9.0.4 on the Formac card, nor can I try the software updater on the Radeon. k

you're right, K.

that is a pretty wicked difference.

I'm curious about the various Formac firmware updates, too. I've left bo_bo running as is, as I don't want to get into a nutroll with the firmware right now. Maybe later, after we get some of the new Radeon and PerFormance 4's in.
