iT8  The iStoragePro iT8 SAE12G SAS Expander enclosures are state of the art SAS/SATA powerhouse for your workstation. This unit is a tower-style enclosure sporting a smooth, modern design that complements any desktop workstation. Through the process of Daisy Chaining, you can connect up to 15 iT8SAE12G enclosures. You can even mix 12G and older 6G Expander enclosures. The iStoragePro iT8SAE12G Desktop Enclosures are equipped with high performance 12G SAS expansion technology, designed with one Mini-SAS 8644 cable connection to a computer installed 12Gb SAS Controller. These enclosures also have two expansion ports to allow Daisy Chaining multiple enclosures off of a single SAS Card. This efficient SAS interface provides a cost effective solution without compromising performance or reliability.

The SAE12G Enclosure connects to your computer installed 12Gb⁄s SAS Controller with 1 Mini-SAS 8644 cable. MacGurus recommends the Areca ARC-1883x 12G SAS Hardware RAID card for use with these enclosures. That card is a killer solution to giving the most reliable and fastest storage possible.

6GB SAS Logo Future proof Thunderbolt compatibility. These enclosures run off PCIe mounted RAID controllers. Areca has provided Thunderbolt drivers for their Enterprise class 1883 controller family. When you move your work to a new platform that has Thunderbolt instead of PCIe slots, we simply use a Thunderbolt to PCIe expansion adapter and continue use without need for reformatting and at the same extreme performance levels as enjoyed in a PCIe slot.

Backward Compatibility

SAS Expansion enclosures can be hooked up to either a 12G host card using an SPF 8644 to 8644 MiniSAS cable, or to a 6G controller using a 8088 to 8644 adapter MiniSAS cable. You can also chain 6G expansion enclosures after the 12G using the adapter cable.

Notes: Full 12G speeds require a host card attached to a PCIe revision 3 slot and 12G drives. At this time only a few PCs have Rev3 PCIe slots, and only some very spendy SAS drives are 12G. The best a Mac can do is Revision 2, either in a PCIe MacPro tower or a newer Mac with Thunderbolt2, which is alsoRevision 2 PCIe as well. That isn't saying the 12G system isn't faster than a 6G, even on a Rev 2 bus, it is! And with enough SATAIII 6G drives you can push the max bandwidth well over 2GB/sec. Just don't expect full 12g speeds until we have Thunderbolt3 and PCIe revision 3 buses to attach to. An 8 drive RAID will run at the full speed of that number of drives, it will take a lot more drives in the RAID before we can see top speeds of the 12G bus.

Personal notes: iStoragePro makes one of the best engineered lineup of hgh end SAS enclosures available today. This is serious Enterprise Class gear, with a capital 'E'. They have superb functional drive trays, quiet cooling and great power supplies. They will last for years and years and are usually upgradable as newer interfaces inevitably replace older ones. As high end photo and video storage they cannot be beat   ~Rick
