Notes about Hotswap: Our recommendation with all multidrive Firewire storage is that when swapping drives all Firewire drives should be dismounted from the desktop, enclosure
powered down, drives swapped, then enclosure powered back up. This provides the safest environment for your data and prevents potential unintentional dismounts of drives that are still actively transferring data.
Standard Trays are simple and
low key. Personally I like these trays without bells and whistles. Each tray has built in drive
power and drive activity lights, so
you know which drives are working and which aren't. Drive tray fully surrounds drive when out of the Burly.

Trayless Bays - Use no drive trays at all. Slip your bare drive in and close the door. Simple system that works. Be aware, you are handling a bare drive when out of the bay. Antistatic drive boxes are recommended when drives are stored. |
 |
LCD Display Trays for those who need some direct monitoring of drive
status. The display is pictured at
right. It displays drive activity, drive temperature and fan operation for each
drive. Also has audible overtemp and fan failure alarms. |

Hotswap trays protect your drives when out of the Burly by completely surrounding them in an aluminum box. You can label them, carry them with you, or stack them on a shelf.

Note: LCD trays will not work in standard bays. The reverse does work, standard trays work perfectly in LCD bays. So if you have an LCD equipped enclosure you can purchase additional LCD or standard trays. If you have a standard tray equipped enclosure you can only use standard trays.
Hard Drives
You may select your Burly enclosure with or without installed hard drives. Either use the pulldown menu to choose what drives we install and test, or you can mix any combination of drives on our MacGurus
SATA Hard Drive page and our techs will install and test those before packaging and shipping your Burly to you. We test every Burly and its drives before shipping.
MacGurus' engineers are continually running tests on available model hard drives. We select drives based on compatibility for the widest range of uses, that have the best performance possible, and most important, are the most reliable. Data security comes first. Our purpose is to weed out and reject drives that have problems before they get into our customer's systems.
At this time Seagate Barracuda and Hitachi Deskstar drives meet our demands best. That said, with Seagate having acquired Samsung's drive business and Western Digital now having purchased Hitachi's drive division, there really are only two manufacturers. No matter how many or few manufacturers, our selections will still be based on testing of individual models and not brand name. And always with reliability outweighing all other considerations.
The Burly Firewire/USB enclosures will support use of most any SATAI, SATAII or SATAIII desktop drive. Many Enterprise or RAID drives will work fine as well, but are not often tested by us as they have features that usually are not intended to improve desktop computer drive performance. Enterprise and RAID drives are enhanced for server and multiuser environments and those features may conflict with desktop buses. We tend to avoid drives not designed specifically to meet the demands of desktop computing.
