MacGurus Burly
Dual Port Multiplier Enclosure
Up to
18 TeraBytes in
One Enclosure!
6
Drives, 2 port Multiplier cables and blazing SPEED. All in a very quiet,
powerful
package. The Dual PM Burly takes a 4 bay size enclosure and uses state of the
art tray system to mount 6 drives. With today's larger and faster drives
this means you can either have up to 3 TBs on 3 drives backed up in the same
box to
a second
set of 3 drives or you can use RAID0 and RAID all 6 for full speed uncompressed
1080p video editing. This 6 drive RAID0 is fully capable of real time editing of
2k uncompressed video!
The most rock solid enclosure on the market today. The Burly has
a massive 300 WATT power supply. With 4 monster 80 MM cooling fans we can leave
them at slower turning 2700 RPM speeds for very quiet operation. And the cooling
is as efficient as needed to maintain rock solid drive temperatures. All
these
features
are
aimed
at
giving
the
highest stability in temperatures and power supplied. That is the #1 priority
of a drive
enclosure.
Is
your
data
worth
the
best
protection
possible?
Using a pair of 6 bay enclosures allows either a 12 drive RAID for
the beastliest - hair on fire - 2K Video editing speeds. Or more commonly, a
pair
of
matching 6 drive arrays with one tasked
as your backup. All supported off a single 4 port SATA host card.
Attaching the enclosure to your computer couldn’t be easier.
With an eSATA connector on the back for each port multiplier - you connect the
eSATA cable between PCI host card and enclosure.
Enclosures come fully assembled either ready to install your choice of
hard drives
or already assembled and tested with Seagate 7200.12 SATAII 7200.11 SATAII or Hitachi SATAII or SATAIII Deskstar Hard Drives
for
industry
leading
performance at bargain prices.
All components are SATAII capable and SATAIII compatible.
Performance
Newest Drives are approaching 150 MB/sec without RAID. Formatted into a RAID0 array
across six drives, even our slowest model, the 7200.11, is fast enough for 1080p throughout the
capacity of the array. Using even faster model Seagate and Hitachi Deskstar drives the top speed is the
same, since the limit is that of the individual eSATA ports, but the sustained performance no longer drops
significantly after 80% of capacity is reached. You will enjoy the faster speed deeper into the capacity of the
array.
These
numbers allow real time editing of 1080 10 Bit uncompressed HD video. Requires
SATA Host
cards with sufficient bandwidth capability. Recommended - any of the 4 port
cards from Lycom, or Sonnet since they have the chipsets and bandwidth
to support these kinds of performance numbers.
Performance from individual non-RAID drives is in the 100-150 MB/sec
range, empty, per drive.

**NOTES on Drives** Macgurus
uses Retail Seagate Barracuda 7200.12, 7200.11 (1.5TB drive) or Hitachi Deskstar drives in all our enclosures.
These are the very best hard drives made for all desktop and workstation purposes,
especially in RAIDs. Server and Enterprise drives have feature sets designed
to
increase performance in large server environments and huge Enterprise RAID farms
-
these features will not improve performance and may degrade reliability
on desktop
systems.
All desktop host bus adapters are designed and tested to run with desktop drives.
A word about OEM versus Retail Drives -
MacGurus' strongly recommends that our customers avoid purchasing drives
marketed as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) hard drives. We suggest
that you only purchase and use Retail labeled drives. Retail
drives carry the retail manufacturer's warranty, 3 to 5 years, with all
the contractual support that the warranty provides. OEM drives were
originally manufactured under contract for one of the many major manufacturers
of computers and or servers. OEM drives often do not carry a warranty from
the drive
manufacturer nor from
the
OEM buyer.
Instead they are sold
to resellers 'as is' and any warranty is provided by the reseller. Worse
yet, these drives may have custom firmware as specified by the OEM. We frequently
see customers with OEM market drives have compatibility problems in desktop
usage. There is just no way to know what you are getting when you purchase
OEM drives and warranty coverage is hit or miss depending on the source.
The total randomness in behavior makes it very difficult to diagnose and
maintain your storage array. Data transfer problems, mounting failures and
total drive failures are common
when OEM drives are used. MacGurus ONLY sells Retail drives.
